Genaro Rivera-Torres

Genaro “Geno” Rivera – Torres, 94, of Newark, passed away on May 6, 2024. Born on December 20, 1929. in Santurce, Puerto Rico., he is the son of Juan Rivera and Monserrate Torres. After living for a while in Puerto Rico, he decided to move to New York City where he raised all his six children, in Brooklyn County. He raised his children like every father wants to raise their children, with values, respect, honesty and above all, love for each other. He always had a smile, a joke (although some were mongos) but he still made everyone laugh. He always kept the family up to date on his parents and siblings, although his children never met their maternal or paternal grandparents. He dedicated himself to construction. He did all kinds of work, from building maintenance to houses. He always had to keep busy doing something. Don Geno had a great admiration for trio music. His LP record collection was incredible. There wasn't a Trio album that he didn't have. Most of the time was dedicated to recording this music on cassettes and giving them to all the friends and acquaintances who he knew liked this type of music. In his life he had his ups and downs, like any human being, but his love and protection for his children and wife were always present. Although sometimes we thought there were preferences, he never said “no”. He was a man of helping those who needed it, he was always present for everyone. He will always be missed. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carmen L. Rivera; children: Evelyn (Jesus) Sierra, Genaro (Deltrina) Rivera, Jr., Mayra Rivera, Robert (Shamane) Rivera, Sr., and Nelson (Emma Velazquez) Rivera, Sr.; grandchildren: Gabriel Perez, Jr., Eric G. Perez, Nilia I. Perez, Orlando J. Sierra, Christian G. Sierra, Michael M. Sierra, Steven M. Sierra, Jorge (Nancy) Rivera, Genaro “JJ” Rivera, Steven Rivera, Miguel (Stephanie) Rivera, Jessenia (Jose A. Gomez) Velez, , Carmen (Alex Duke) Velez, Robert J. Rivera, Jr., Christine A. Rivera Minthorn, Christina (Luis) DeJesus, Stephine Rivera and Nelson Rivera, Jr.; great grandchildren: Karoline Perez, Amy S. Perez, Jonathan G. Perez, Joshua G. Perez, Khole Rivera, Julian Rivera, Emery Rivera, Jonah Rivera, Jayden Rivera, Isaiah Rivera, Nico Rivera, Remy Rivera, Josephine Gomez, Jesus A. Gomez, Natalia Nicole Ortiz, Jude Reynolds Rivera, Liam Minthorn, Caleb Rivera, Christopher L. DeJesus, Nicholas A. DeJesus, Alexander A. DeJesus, Jonathan L. DeJesus, and Rosa M. Vega; great great grandchildren: Noah D. Sanchez and Adaia I. Acosta; he is also survived by son in law Gabriel Perez, Sr., as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jasmine Rivera. Relatives and friends are invited to the committal service on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 10 AM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road in Bear.
