Peggy Pearl Moore

Peggy Pearl Williams was born in Amarillo, Texas on July 18,1929, the third child of Gladys and Hardy Adrian Williams. She grew up loving classical music and played the piano and violin in the local symphony. When Peggy was 14 years old her family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. That year was a big one for Peggy. She played Oboe and Clarinet in the marching band, excelled in schoolwork, was chosen class favorite and was baptized at the Fox and Lake Church of Christ. It was at her baptism that she caught the eye of Charles Moore. Charles’ sister had announced that there was a new girl at church, and she was the prettiest girl she had ever seen! Charles and Peggy became high school sweethearts. By the time Peggy was 16, Charles was preparing to go to war and like many young people at that time, they decided to get married. Peggy sold her treasured violin to help them get started. Charles returned from the war and decided to go into the ministry. Their work with churches took them from Oklahoma to Montana then back to New Mexico and, finally, to the Newark Church of Christ in Newark, Delaware where they served for 50 years. While in Newark, Charles and Peggy helped the church build a daycare, then a school and finally, a foster home. Peggy was an essential part of all those ministries. She taught ladies classes, and she made sure no one in the church was overlooked. Every person who came to the church was welcomed into Peggy’s home for a meal. Holiday meals almost always included those who were alone or could not get home. And everyone loved having a meal that Peggy prepared because she was a great cook. Her pies were legendary - especially blueberry and pecan. One time the church was raising money for a new bathroom for the children in the daycare. Peggy made 80 pies in one day, sold them all and the bathroom got built. Peggy was a lifelong learner. She loved all literature and was an avid reader her whole life. However, everyone who knew Peggy knew that her very greatest passion was reading and studying the word of God. Peggy’s faith was real and present in her daily life. A favorite Bible verse for her was James 1:27, "Religion that God accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…”. This she and Charles did. In 1967 they approached Children Services in Delaware and asked to adopt children who, at that time, were not adoptable. As a result of this request, Charles and Peggy became the first people allowed to adopt bi-racial children in the state of Delaware and Laura and Jon became part of the Moore family. All who knew her knew Peggy was genuine, easy to be with, intelligent and humble. When you talked to her, you knew she was interested in you. She radiated gentleness with her eyes and voice. She knew how to laugh, particularly at herself. Peggy knew how to be content in all situations. When Charles passed in 2019, she missed him terribly, but she did not pine for him. She knew she would see him again and, if Jesus wanted her to be alive, then he must have a purpose for her. Peggy did not fear death. She really believed the scripture, “To live is Christ. To die is gain.” Philippians 1:21-23 Peggy was alert to the end. On her last night on earth, granddaughter Liz heard Peggy weakly mumbling something. Liz climbed into the bed and got as close as she could in order to hear her words. Peggy was not mumbling at all, but, instead, she was singing Amazing Grace. Peggy died with complete confidence in the amazing grace of Jesus. She truly believed he loved her and would save her. And she was at peace. Peggy is survived by seven children and their families: Geoffery Moore and Sharon (Lemp) Moore; Eli Moore and Emily (DeBusk) Moore, Iris, Mirabel, Sophia; Elizabeth Moore; Megan (Moore) Anderson and Ken Anderson, Ivy, Archer. Sharla (Moore) Hackworth and Richard Hackworth; Eric and Melissa Gilpin, Madison, Jack, Charlie; Melanie Hackworth, Jenny, Justin Tobias (Olivia and Oakley – great-great-granddaughters), Jacob Tobias; Joshua and Katie Hackworth, August, Noah, Evie; Kristi Hackworth, Joel and Savannah Camarillo (Emerson – great-great- granddaughter); Janell Rogers (Mazzie, Kenna – great-great- granddaughters); Christopher Hackworth; Sarah Hackworth.
