Reginald Curtis Beverly

Reginald Curtis Beverly, affectionately known as “Curt” was born on May 5, 1933, to the late Walter Beverly and Beulah Lee Beverly, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On Saturday, January 14, 2023, the Lord called Curt to depart from this life to his eternal home of rest. At an early age Curt accepted the Lord as his personal savior and was baptized and nurtured in the ways of the Lord by his parents at North Penn Baptist Church. In later years he reaffirmed his faith and dedication and joined Promise Memorial Baptist Church. Curt was education in the Philadelphia public school system and attended Central High School. He was the youngest sibling of the late Walter Stafford Beverly and the late Vivian E. Robinson and his special god-brother, the late Herbert (Mickey) Jenkins. After leaving high school Curt joined the United States Air Force, May 31, 1950. He rose to the rank of a Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged, September 1953. On March 8, 1953, Curt united in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Evelyn C. Irving and was a beloved husband for 70 years. The Union was blessed with one son, the late Reginald C. Beverly, Jr. and one daughter, Larita R. Mason. Curt was employed by the Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) upon discharged from the U.S. Air Force, in 1954. He established a special hiring program which opened doors for many young minorities in an effort to help to establish a diverse workforce at PECO. Curt was known as the “Enforcer”. He was a mentor to many of the young minority employees he hired and established lifelong relationships. Curt retired from PECO as a General Supervisor in the Customer Operations Department, after 37 ½ years of service, June 1991. Upon retiring from PECO, Curt and Evelyn relocated to Port Orange, FL. and became associated with the Chris Gadson American Legion Post 204, in Daytona Beach, FL. He was elected 2nd Vice Commander and the following year he was elected 1st Vice Commander. Curt served as Commander of Post 204 for four years. During which time he chaired almost every committee within Post 204 and served as Adjutant and 1st Commander and Finance Officer. Curt served as the 17th District Executive Committeeman for two years and District Commander for two years. Curt was appointed Department Membership Chairman by the Department Commander Omer Smith, from 2000-2001, during which time the Department reached an all-time high in membership for the first time in a number of years. Curt was elected Northern Area Commander, 2001-2002, Department Vice Commander, 2002-2003 and Department Commander of the State of Florida, 2003-2004. Upon completing a successful year as Department Commander, the American Legion reached an all-time high in membership for the Department of Florida. Curt continued to be active in the Florida American Legion offering his support and guidance whenever requested. Curt also sponsored and mentored young recruits through the American Legion Boy’s State Program. Curt enjoyed fishing up and down the east coast. One of his favorite fishing areas was the Outer Banks, NC. He could also be found fish at his vacation home at Beach Harbor, in Grasonville, MD. Curt also enjoyed his dog Midnight, jazz music, playing cards and watching his favorite basketball teams (NBA- Warriors, WMBA – Minnesota Lynx and Women’s College Basketball – Connecticut Suns). Curt leaves a legacy of love and treasured memories to his devoted wife, Evelyn C. Beverly; daughter Larita Mason, granddaughters Larita “Candy”, Mayia and Monika (Nicki) Mason, grandson Stephen Mason (Ria); great-grandsons Tristan Randall Mason-Thomas, Jayden Mason and great-granddaughter Skylar Mason; very special adopted daughter Alfreda Jacobs and adopted sons Ray Jacobs and Kevin Braxton; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Curt was a people person and was loved by many. He was very proud of his family!
