Stanley Irvin Berkowitz

Stanley I. Berkowitz, age 83, of Earleville, MD passed away on August 8, 2019. Stan was a kind and loving man who was devoted to his family. He lived a full life. Stan was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Daniel and Lillian Berkowitz. Stan was active in Boy Scouts of America as a child and later as a leader while his sons were involved. He served as Cub Master, Assistant Boy Scout and District Training Leader, and eventually earned the Silver Beaver Award, the highest possible leadership award. Stan celebrated his bar mitzvah at age 13. He graduated in 1954 from Germantown High School and went on to attend Drexel University in Philadelphia. Later, Stan joined the U.S. Air Force after his father passed away. He met the love of his life, Peggy, while he was stationed in Rockport, MA. Stan fell in love with boating there too and built his first boat in that seafaring area in 1956. After marrying, Stan and Peggy moved to Philadelphia and later Hatboro, PA area where they raised their four children. As an engineer of industrial valves, Stan founded and operated Circle Valve Technologies Company. Throughout the years Stan and his family enjoyed boating on the Delaware River and in the Chesapeake Bay. Fun and friendships abounded through boating and their times at the Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbour. After retirement, Stan and Peggy moved to Earleville, MD and opened Lighthouse Gifts and Custom Framing in Chesapeake City. Stan helped his wife and daughter in the store and did custom framing. He also filled his retirement days by serving as a past Commodore and current Treasurer for Top of the Bay Yacht Club, and as a member of the Chesapeake Commodore’s Club. Stan was very active with his granddaughter during her tenure as the Queen of the Chesapeake while she advocated for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He loved his whole family and was very proud of all his grandchildren and their educational goals. Stan’s legacy of love will continue in the lives of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed. Stanley is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret O. Berkowitz; his sons: Daniel Robert Berkowitz, Arnold Bennett Berkowitz (Polly), Andrew Wayne Berkowitz; his daughter, Debora Anne Vogelsong; his beloved grandchildren: Nolan, Ethan, and Elaina Berkowitz and Nathan and Lillian Vogelsong; his sister, Barbara Frances Pidgeon and her daughter, Sarah Simmons (Travis); He is also survived by his extensive in-law family: William Lafond, Robert and Dolores Whitmarsh, Lois Hamilton, Mary and Frank Nickerson, Laura Ball, and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Stan was preceded in death by his stepfather, Samuel Fells; his sister-in-law, Nancy Lafond; and brothers-in-law, John Pidgeon and his best friend and first mate, Bruce Hamilton. A memorial gathering in celebration of Stan’s life will be Sunday, September 15, 2019, at 12 Noon at Hack's Point Fire Hall, 1185 Glebe Road, Earleville, MD 21919. Burial will be private.
