Ambrose M. Poe

Ambrose M. Poe (Mont), age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2023. Mont was born on May 26, 1936, in Lansing, North Carolina to the late Oscar and Eva Poe. Mont was a devoted Christian, husband, and father who loved God, his family, and his church. He accepted Christ as his Savior as a young adult and served the Lord his entire adult life. He attended Lighthouse Baptist Church for many years and served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School, and served where needed. Mont moved to Delaware as a teenager and graduated from Wilmington High School. He attended college at Delaware Technical & Community College and spent four years in the Air Force honorably served at airbases in California, Alaska, and Arizona. He was an avid hunter and marksman while in the Air Force. Mont was such a marksman that he served as the firing range instructor at Ellison Air Force base and missed representing the USA in the Olympics by just one shot. He enjoyed a 42-year career as a Mechanical Engineer and foreman for the National Vulcanized Fiber (NVF) company in Wilmington, DE. Early in his career he also taught engineering classes for Del-Tech. He retired from NVF in 2000 and enjoyed spending time with his family, was actively involved in his church, and fished regularly with his sons and friends. He looked forward to weekly family breakfast trips to either Hardee’s or Chick-Fil-A (his favorite of late). Mont was an accomplished woodworker, incredibly handy, and could fix or build just about anything. He was an active member of Nehemiah’s Men, a retired men’s handyman group who did maintenance around Lighthouse Church. Each Monday morning, Nehemiah’s Men would gather and enjoy fellowship, donuts, coffee, and occasionally fix something. He was a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan and every year until 2018 when the Eagles won the Super Bowl, could be heard saying, “Next year, we are gonna to kill ‘em!!” Mont was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Eva Poe, and a sister Sally Edwards. He is survived by his wife of 62 years (Jacklene), sons Michael (Louise), Mitchell (Dedra), and daughter Michelle Taylor (John), brother Joseph (Gloria), sisters Betty (Kenny), Helen (Joe), and Ruthann (Simon), 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, from 9:30-11:00 AM at Lighthouse Baptist Church 1842 Otts Chapel Road Newark, DE followed by a service at 11:00 AM. A burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park at 2220 N. Dupont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720.
