April Marie Wrightson

April Wrightson, age 71, went home to the Lord on January 3, 2025. April’s life was one full of love and resilience. At the age of 7, she moved to the Stockley Center in Georgetown, DE, where she lived and grew up by caregivers who cherished her. While her early years were marked by occasional visits from her mother and maternal grandmother, who visited as often as she could until her passing, April longed for the connection of a family. When she was about 10 years old, April’s life changed in a profound and beautiful way. She chose Anna Lee Lewis, one of her caregivers, to be her mom, telling her with heartfelt certainty, “You are my mom now.” From that moment on, Anna Lee became not just a caregiver, but April’s devoted mother in every sense of the word. April became a cherished part of the Lewis family, spending weekends and forming loving bonds with her “family of the heart”. She adored her dad, Morris; sister, Connie; and brother, Jim. April quickly became a Daddy’s girl and could definitely get anything she wanted from him. She would go to family functions, mini vacations, Sundays at their local Wesleyan church, and Wesleyan Family Camp in Denton MD all with her surrogate family. The Lewis family embraced April with open arms and provided her with unconditional love. April inherited many traits from her family until her passing. She did not like to be late, was very proud of her belongings and took excellent care of them, she loved her staff that were respectful of her wishes and that kept their word, and lastly, she wanted to live her life to the fullest while having her choices honored until she entered the pearly gates. April chose to move to the Mary Campbell Center in Wilmington in the spring of 1978. She quickly developed many relationships at MCC. She was proud of her many accomplishments over the years. Things like participating in church activities the Blue Gold games, Special Olympics Bocce -the time she was honored by Cal Ripken as the Delaware Special Olympian of the year was a particular highlight-, utilizing the DART bus on her own to shop for health/hygiene products for the MCC store, learning to use communication devices, swimming and meeting her PT/OT goals, and her educational pursuits are a few of the areas she was most proud of. She is survived by many loving members of the Lewis family including her siblings, several aunts, nieces and nephews. April was a kind and loving person who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Services in celebration of April’s life will be held on Sunday. February 2, 2025 at 2 PM at Iron Faith Fellowship, 801 Darley Rd, Wilmington, DE 19810.
