Barbara A. Markey

After a courageous five-year battle with cancer, our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Barbara Hopkins Markey, age 75, of Newark, DE, passed away on February 24, 2023. She was born in Wilmington, DE, on February 16, 1948, to the late Charles B. Hopkins, Sr. and Marian Johnson Carter. She was also preceded in death by her identical twin sister, Shirley Redmond. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Richard Markey; son, Jon C. Markey (Tammy); daughter, Nicole A. Markey; and grandchildren Arianna Hairston, Olivia and Cole Markey; brother, Charles B. Hopkins, Jr. (JoAnne); brothers-in-law, Jonathan Markey (Karen) and Ed Redmond; stepfather, Bentley Carter; 2 stepbrothers, Steven (Jill) and Randy (Pam); and a host of extended family and friends. Barbara was a native Delawarean, raised in New Castle, DE. She attended DeLaWarr High School and graduated from Wm. Penn in 1966. Barbara had a long working career. She worked for Wilmington Dry Goods, Radio Electric, Southern States, and Avon prior to her being employed at DuPont for almost 25 years. After retirement from DuPont, Barbara went on to work at Claymont Community Center for 17 years. Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who had boundless energy for her family, friends, and community. She would go the extra mile for anyone. She thoroughly enjoyed time spent with her family, whether it was a family vacation, Sunday dinner, or one of their sporting events. Barb was always involved in her children and grandchildren’s school and social activities. Her commitment to her community was evident through the many organizations she supported. She ran a youth bowling program for over 10 years at Brookside Bowling Alley and was the president of the DuPont Employees’ Bowling Association (DEBA) which she had been involved in for over 30 years. Barbara loved to crochet. She made 200 or more afghans and taught numerous friends how to crochet. Barbara always gave the afghans as wedding or baby shower gifts. In her later years, she joined the Howard Weston Senior Center and enjoyed her time there. A visitation will be held Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 10:30 AM-12 Noon at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a service in celebration of Barbara’s life at 12 Noon. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Howard Weston Senior center, 1 Bassett Ave., New Castle, DE 19720, Special Olympics, or the Ronald McDonald House.
