Charlotte U. Syme

Charlotte Ulrich Syme, age 95, of New Castle, DE, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 4, 2015. Charlotte was born in Baltimore, MD, on April 22, 1920 to Edward and Dorine Ulrich and graduated from high school in Raleigh, NC, while her father was a lay pastor and insurance salesman. She was a 1942 alumna of Bob Jones College (now Bob Jones University) with a double major in Bible and English. At Bob Jones she met her husband, George Syme, of Staten Island, NY. They had planned to marry immediately after they finished their education; however, George was in officer training during their college years and was called to active duty two days after graduation. Charlotte and George had to postpone their marriage for 3 ½ years until the end of World War II. They were married on October 13, 1945. George recognized that his wife had a gift for writing and encouraged her to pursue it. Together they became a well-known writing team of adult and youth Bible study material for Baptist Publications (now Accent Publications, Div of David C. Cook Publishing). George would do the research and Charlotte did the writing. George was able to use a lot of the material as he taught an adult Bible class at their church. They also wrote two books – The Scriptures Cannot be Broken and Love is Jelly on the Bread. Much of their material is still in print. Charlotte continued to write Bible study material for Union Gospel Press after the death of her husband and was in demand as a writer until her final illness. She was a long time member of Grace Bible Church in Souderton, PA, where she and George raised their family. She moved to Newark, DE, and later to New Castle after the death of her husband to be closer to her family. Here she became an active member of Faith Baptist Church. Charlotte is survived by her children: Dorine Houston of St. Petersburg, FL; Robert Syme (Donna) of New Castle, DE; Daniel Syme of Wilmington, DE; sister, Dorine “Pat” Lennon of Taylors, SC; 2 grandchildren, Steve Syme of Seoul, South Korea and Kristen Syme (Samy Alamri) of Vancouver, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Dorine Ulrich; husband, George Syme; brother, Ed Ulrich; and son-in-law Stuart Houston. A visitation will be held Friday, June 12, 2015 from 2-3 PM at Faith Baptist Church, 4210 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808 followed by a service in celebration of Charlotte’s life at 3 PM. Interment will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11 AM at Limerick Garden of Memories, 44 Swamp Pike, Limerick, PA 19468.
