Daniel J. Maher Jr.

Daniel J. Maher Jr., age 73, of Dover, DE, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Dan was born April 5, 1951, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Daniel and Joyce (Nicholson) Maher. He grew up in West Deptford, NJ, graduating in 1969 from Gloucester Catholic High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973, traveling extensively on the USS Barney (DDG-6) as a radar technician. Dan worked as a collection manager at the National Bank & Trust of Gloucester County from 1973 to 1982 where he met his wife, Elsie. He earned his associate degree from Gloucester County College and his bachelor’s degree from Glassboro State. In 1982, Dan moved to Delaware with his family through his job with Playtex. He later worked as an auditor with the Delaware Department of Transportation, retiring in 2013. Dan was the ultimate family man who loved nothing more than supporting his grandchildren in their interests and activities. His schedule was happily filled with outings to baseball, lacrosse, field hockey and basketball games; school concerts and plays; marching band performances and so much more. He was the proudest Pop-Pop whose impact will live on through the lives he touched and the memories he made with loved ones. Dan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elsie; children, Stephen Maher (Jenny) and David Maher (Lindsay); grandchildren: Caroline, Conor, Anna and Carly; five siblings: Karen Pierce (Frank), Joyce Maher, Tom Maher (Sharon), Tim Maher (Debbie), and Jerry Maher (Michelle); and a host of nephews, nieces, in-laws, extended family members and dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 10 to 11 AM followed by a service in celebration of Dan’s life at 11 AM at Strano & Feeley Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE, 19702. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
