Daniel J. Scalone

Daniel J Scalone, age 82, passed away on January 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. Known by everyone as Dan, he was born in Wilmington, DE on July 4, 1941. Dan attended Brown Vocational H.S., until he needed to drop out in 11th grade to help support his family. He later received his GED in 1980. Early on, Dan enjoyed playing basketball and was on the varsity team for the West End Neighborhood House. He also liked hanging out with his cousins and neighborhood friends - often attending dances, where he met the love of his life, Catherine Leonzio. They were inseparable and so in love. Dan and Cathy married in 1962, built a life and raised a family of 6 together. They were married for 58 years until Catherine’s death in 2020. Dan had several positions throughout his life. He worked for Grubb Lumber, Electric Hose, and City of Wilmington before making his career with The City of Newark. He worked for the City of Newark as the Superintendent of the Water Department for 25+ years before retiring. Family was everything for Dan. He always enjoyed the special times spent with his grand and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing golf, watching and cheering on the Las Vegas Raiders, Newark Senior Center playing Pinochle, getting together with the guys from the Old Neighborhood, Perkins Sunday Crew, traveling, eating crabs, cryptograms and watching old westerns. Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Catherine; parents Joseph and Carmella Scalone; and sister, Rosalie. He is survived by his 4 children: Daniel Scalone, Catherine Painter, David Scalone (Kim) and Andrea Lane (Donald); 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Anthony Scalone and Joseph Scalone. A visitation will be held Friday, January 26, 2024, from 9:30-11 AM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a celebration of Dan’s life at 11 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Daniel’s name to The Parkinsons Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
