David Allen Hanna

David Allen Hanna, age 72, of Newark, DE passed away at home on Thursday, December 17, 2020. Dave fought a long battle against heart disease and cancer with his loving wife Katherine always at his side. Born in Wilmington, DE, to the late Dorothy M. (Lane) Hanna and Donald Hanna, Dave grew up in Newport and graduated from Brown Vo-Tech High School where he learned his skills as a carpenter. He served bravely as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam. Dave was awarded the Purple Heart with gold star for being wounded on multiple occasions. He also received the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal for Valor in recognition of his efforts during the rescue of his fellow squad members. Dave was a life member of Minquas Fire Company No.1 in Newport, DE and spent his mornings there sharing stories and playing poker with his friends. He was a fan of many sports, including NASCAR, football, and basketball. Dave was content with the simple pleasures of life, time spent with family and friends. He loved sitting on his patio, listening to music, with his wife by his side and his dogs at his feet, while enjoying a cold beer. Dave was quietly strong, always loving, and always loved. He will be deeply missed. Dave is survived by his wife of 27 years, Katherine Boyer Hanna; his brothers: Gerald Hanna (Susan) of Bear, DE and Roger Hanna (Andrea) of Oceanview, DE; his sister, Jeanne Rebilas (Richard) of Wendell, NC; his mother-in-law, Virginia Boyer; his sisters-in-law: Virginia Sullivan (John) of Dagsboro, DE and Beverly Schmitt (Edward) of Thornton, PA; his brothers-in-law: Ralph Boyer (Susan) of Gig Harbor, WA, William Boyer (Andrea) of Haines City, FL, Christopher Boyer (Jacquelyn) of Elkton, MD, Richard Boyer (Joanne) of Bear, DE, Robert Boyer (Susan) of Wilmington, DE, and Charles Boyer (Kathleen) of Bear, DE; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; and Daisy, his much-loved Mini Dachshund. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorothy Lane Hanna. Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 10-11 AM at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. A service in celebration of Dave’s life will follow at 11 AM. Burial with Military Honors will be private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In light of COVID 19 restrictions, guests will be required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. Those who have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms are asked to not attend.
