Dennis Edward Bergbauer

Dennis always did the best he could. Born in 1936 in Salem, NJ to the late Herman and Emma Bergbauer, he lived in Pennsville-Salem until he was drafted into the US Army in 1962. Dennis often said that his Army service, although unplanned, was the best thing that ever happened to him. It taught him many things that helped him in life. He gave 35 years of dedicated service to DuPont Chambers Works in Carney's Point, NJ. Dennis rose from shoveling dye to General Foreman. He also operated Marlboro Marina in Salem for 13 of those years. After retiring from DuPont, Dennis continued to work with several limo companies, one of which had a contract to drive celebrities to the Valley Forge Music Fair. His last job was working at Two Rivers Yacht Basin near his home. Dennis was a hard worker and enjoyed being around the marina. There were obstacles and challenges, but he always did the best he could. Dennis had a chance to live his life twice  his real life, and then again through conversations during his fight with lung cancer. It is amazing what you forget until you rummage through the years to remember the details. He was a doer who helped his family and anyone else who needed him. Dennis loved to fix things and would often go to bed with a problem and wake up with the answer. He loved the water and had a boat of some kind most of his life. Later, he owned an RV that he enjoyed as well. Not much of a joiner, Dennis did belong to a boating club and was a Commodore of the Chesapeake Commodores Club in 2009. The organization meant a lot to him as he had many friends in the boating community. As his illness progressed, the many cards, calls, visits, prayers, and thoughts meant so much. A special thanks to everyone for their help throughout the past 3 1/2 years, including: Dr. Guarino, Cheryl, Christine, and Krissy from the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Kim, Diane, Carol, Agnes, and Lu Ellen of Amedisys Hospice of Elkton, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions to either would be appreciated. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Carol (Miller); sons, Dennis, Jr. and Damon; daughter, Diana (the rose between two thorns as he called her); his little black dog, Cinderella; and five grandchildren: Grace, Lucas, Kathryn, Kelly, and Alex. Dennis was one of a kind. His family considered him a real success story as he accomplished many things in his life. He was preceded in death by his grandparents who helped raised him, Ralph and Laura Fox, with whom he had a special relationship with. A service will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 10 AM in the chapel at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
