Dorothy A. Corbett "Dottie"

Dorothy A. Corbett “Dottie”, age 79, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, surrounded by her family. Dottie was the oldest of six children, as the oldest sibling, Dottie took on a great amount of responsibility at a very young age. A role she took great pride in, she carried this with strength and love throughout her life. She shared a close and very strong bond with her brothers and sisters, whom she loved dearly. She graduated from Newark High School in 1966. Shortly after graduating, Dottie would go on to marrying the love of her life, Harold. Her greatest joy was becoming a mother, and she built a life that allowed her to be present for her children. She was running an in-home daycare, and working as a home interiors demonstrator. Dottie was known best for her strong work ethic and vibrant spirit. Along with her strong work ethic, came a variety of roles over the years. She went from a local sub shop, to the Newark Cinema Center, and even working as a secretary in a realtor’s office. She also made history as the first female toll booth collector in the state of Delaware. Later, working as a companion for seniors and held positions at both Wood Company for MBNA Food Service and, and at the student center at the University of Delaware. Dottie had the most contagious smile and heart for others, especially those with special needs. She adored her grand-dogs; Piper, Coco, and Serafina. She was especially proud of her yard sales and loved both hosting them and searching for treasures at other local yard sales. A devoted fan of Elvis Presley, she rarely went without her wintergreen lifesavers and always had a quick, witty comeback. Spunky, sassy, and unapologetically opinionated, Dottie lived life with humor, heart, and unmistakable charm. In her later years, while living in assisted living communities, she brought joy to those around her. She loved playing bingo, working on word search puzzles, and often served as a “welcome wagon” to new residents. Her room became the gathering place where the staff and friends would, sit, talk, and share their lives with her. Up until her very last days, Dottie remined easy to talk to and would always, “tell it like it was.” At the end of Dottie’s life she was courageously battling an autoimmune disease and on April 28, 2026, with her daughters holding her hands, she was reunited with her beloved husband, Harold. Dottie will be deeply missed, and her vibrant spirit will live on in all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her. Dottie is survived by her daughters, Holly Corbett (Merton), and Angela Corbett (Peter), her siblings , Myron and David VanMeter, Dolores Higgins, MaryAnn Arroyo, her brother-in-law, Elwood Corbett, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Myron VanMeter, her husband, Harold Corbett, her sister, Margaret Alexander(John), her former husband, Emidio Corbett, her brother-in-laws, Jack Higgins, Ray Arroyo, James Corbett, and her sister-in-laws, Brenda Corbett, and Kay Corbett. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, May 8, 2026 from 2 PM to 3:30 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd, Newark, DE, 19702. A memorial service for Dottie will begin at 3:30 PM. Immediately following, all are invited next door to the VFW Post, 649 Churchmans Rd, Newark, DE 19702, for a bite to eat and to raise a glass sharing a favorite memory of Dottie.
