Felipe Marrero

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Felipe Marrero of Newark, Delaware. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and beloved friend. A man who never knew the word “quit”, he fought to overcome pulmonary fibrosis resulting from COVID-19 for over four long months. He lost his fight on May 1, 2023. Born in Toa Alta, PR on May 26, 1948, Felipe grew up on a farm and from his parents learned an immensely strong work ethic. In 1967 he moved to Wilmington, Delaware where he worked in construction and laying concrete. Later he took a position at Wilmington Finishing Company which he held for thirty years. Lastly, he worked for the City of Wilmington, retiring after 8 years. He was an avid do-it-yourself man and really enjoyed completing home improvement projects, not only for his own home, but for others who needed help with their projects, as he was the first to show up and the last to leave. He literally ran circles around men half his age, and they lovingly referred to him as “The Next Man” because as soon as the project was finished, he would yell out “next”, indicating he was ready to start a new project. Felipe enjoyed music and instilled a love for it in his three daughters who fondly remember hearing him sing throughout the house, dancing with him on his feet and twirling them around. In the spring and summer, you could find him gardening, growing vegetables and sharing them with his family and neighbors. Felipe was loved for his generosity, kindness and fun-loving nature. His hospitality had no limits. Once in his home you were treated as family. Children adored him for his playfulness and good sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Secundino and Julia Marrero Morales; brothers, Julio and Jose; and sisters, Rosa and Iris. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mercedes Marrero; daughters: Iris Delira, Mercedes Thodos, and Maria Silva; sons-in-law, Carlos Delira III and David Silva; brothers: Secundino, Antonio, Elbin, Wilfredo, and Julio; sisters: Lydia, Sonia, Auria, and Jesusa; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a large extended family; and many, many friends. A viewing will be held Monday, May 8, 2023, from 10-11 AM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a service in celebration of Felipe’s life at 11 AM. Fue esposo, padre, abuelo, bisabuelo, hermano, tío y querido amigo. Un hombre que nunca conoció la palabra “renunciar”, luchó para superar la fibrosis pulmonar resultante del COVID-19 durante más de cuatro largos meses. Perdió su pelea el 1 de mayo de 2023. Nacido en Toa Alta, PR el 26 de mayo de 1948, Felipe creció en una finca y de sus padres aprendió una ética de trabajo inmensamente fuerte. En 1967 se mudó a Wilmington, Delaware, donde trabajó en la construcción y colocación de concreto. Más tarde ocupó un puesto en Wilmington Finishing Company, cargo que ocupó durante treinta años. Por último, trabajó para la Ciudad de Wilmington, retirándose después de 8 años. Era un ávido hombre de bricolaje y realmente disfrutaba completar proyectos de mejoras para el hogar, no solo para su propia casa, sino también para otras personas que necesitaban ayuda con sus proyectos, ya que él era el primero en llegar y el último en irse. Literalmente corría en círculos entre hombres de la mitad de su edad, y se referían a él con amor como "El próximo hombre" porque tan pronto como terminaba el proyecto, gritaba "siguiente", lo que indica que estaba listo para comenzar un nuevo proyecto. Felipe disfrutó de la música y le inculcó el amor a sus tres hijas, quienes recuerdan con cariño escucharlo cantar por toda la casa, bailar con él de pie y darle vueltas. En la primavera y el verano, puedes encontrarlo haciendo jardinería, cultivando vegetales y compartiéndolos con su familia y vecinos. Felipe fue querido por su generosidad, amabilidad y carácter divertido. Su hospitalidad no tenía límites. Una vez en su casa te trataban como familia. Los niños lo adoraban por su alegría y buen sentido del humor. Se le extrañará mucho. Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Secundino y Julia Marrero Morales; hermanos, Julio y José; y hermanas, Rosa e Iris. Le sobreviven su esposa de 56 años, Mercedes Marrero; hijas: Iris Delira, Mercedes Thodos y Maria Silva; yernos, Carlos Delira III y David Silva; hermanos: Secundino, Antonio, Elbin, Wilfredo y Julio; hermanas: Lydia, Sonia, Auria y Jesusa; 9 nietos; 18 bisnietos; una gran familia extensa; y muchos, muchos amigos. El velorio se llevará a cabo el lunes 8 de mayo de 2023, de 10 a 11 a. m. en Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702, seguido de un servicio en celebración de la vida de Felipe a las 11 a. m.
