Dr. George L. Nichols Jr.

Dr. George L. Nichols, Jr., age 87, died in his home on April 22, 2025. He was the older of the two sons of Elva Grace and George L. Nichols, Sr. Born in a Philadelphia hospital, he grew up across the Delaware River in Lindenwold, New Jersey. After graduating from Lower Camden County Regional High School, he earned a B.S. from Philadelphia College of Bible (now Cairn University) in 1961, then located on 1800 Arch Street in downtown Philadelphia. He would later serve on the board of trustees of his alma mater. As he began his senior year of college, he also began his first pastorate at Nicetown Baptist Church on Germantown Avenue. He was a pastor from 1960 until his retirement from full-time ministry in 2013. After Nicetown, he briefly pastored a church in Elmer, New Jersey, and then spent twenty-five years at Pennsville Baptist Church, Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. His final pastorate ran for 26 years at Faith Baptist Church in Wilmington, Delaware. He then became a member of the church and the choir of Ogletown Baptist Church in Newark, Delaware. Over the years, he received a Master of Arts in Counseling from Liberty University, a Doctor of Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Florida College of the Bible. He also spent significant time on missions and teaching trips around the world in Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Romania, and Ukraine. He often said how blessed he was to be in ministry and travel to all these countries. Everyone who knew “Pastor George” knew that he loved the Bible, singing, and people. As a family man, he married Katherine Diane Hunt, from Morrisville, PA, in 1963. As a pastor’s wife, Diane unceasingly sent cards for all occasions and knitted baby blankets for the newest members of the congregation. They have two children. Katherine Jean Nichols, a longtime employee of various groups at Dupont, lives in Newark. She shares a love of cats and watching sports and classic car shows with her Daddy. Dr. Stephen J. Nichols and his wife, Dr. Heidi Nichols, live in Orlando, Florida, and serve at Reformation Bible College and Ligonier Ministries. Though the octogenarian might not have always known how to use his cell phone, he thoroughly loved his phone calls with his three grandchildren, Benjamin, Ian, and Grace Nichols. He is survived—and deeply missed—by his wife, children, and grandchildren. In 2013, upon retiring from the full-time pastorate, he took a part-time post as a Pastor-at-Large at Lancaster Bible College in Pennsylvania. As he mentored, encouraged, and prayed with students, he was very likely enjoying the dream job of his life. On the day he died, his journal records his plans: “Leave for college, Prayer Table 12-1.” He was blessed in life and in death by his Savior, the Chief Shepherd, who faithfully brought him all the way home. A memorial service will be held at Ogletown Baptist Church, 296 Red Mill Road, Newark, Delaware, Saturday, May 3, 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow.
