George T. Schweiger

George T. Schweiger, age 87, of Newark, Delaware passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Herman and Elenora (Bell) Schweiger. Growing up in the Browntown neighborhood of Wilmington alongside his parents and four siblings, George graduated from Brown Vocational Technical High School in 1955. There, he formed lifelong friendships and enjoyed post-retirement luncheons with his buddies. Proudly serving his country aboard the USS Ticonderoga with the US Navy, George completed his basic training at the Great Lakes and spent time in Norfolk, VA. He considered his naval service one of the best experiences of his life, cherishing the friendships made and the countries visited during his time in the Navy. After his military service, George returned to Delaware and commenced his career at Havoc in Marshalltown. He continued as a lab technician at Basel until his retirement, finding joy in later years driving school buses for the Christina School District and Newark Charter School. A lifelong member of the Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association (DSB), George was also a member of the “Enzian Volkstanzgruppe,” a Bavarian folk dancing group. He loved dancing and performing at numerous Oktoberfests and other DSB events. George was also a past member of the DSB Board of Directors, serving as the First Vice-President, overseeing the management of the Bauernstube. George, along with his loving wife, Helga Schweiger, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, and camping at Red Run Campground. He had the pleasure of visiting many of his favorite destinations, including Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Caribbean. The friendships he cultivated at Red Run became lifelong bonds. Survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Helga Schweiger (Schidlovsky); daughter Mary Reiter (Keith), Brian Schulz (Stephanie), Dieter Schulz (Carin); four grandchildren: Allyssa Schulz-Fricker (Michael), Morgan Schulz (Nicholas Adams), Madison Schulz, and Karl Schulz; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Penelope. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Herman and Frederick, and survived by his brother, Karl Schweiger (Angie), sister, Suzanne Grzybowski (Tom), and many nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Millcroft Living and Compassionate Care Hospice staff for their dedicated care and support. A visitation in George’s honor will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, Delaware from 10:30 am to Noon, followed by a celebration of life at Noon. Interment will be held privately at a later date at the Delaware Veterans cemetery.
