Harry Lee Small Sr.

OBITUARY Harry Lee Small, Sr, age 82, of Newark, Delaware, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 9, 2010. He was one of eleven children born to Enoch Small, Sr. and Laura Lucille Smith on July 6, 1928, in Jacksonville, Florida. Harry graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1946. He enlisted in the Army for two years and was a Korean War Veteran. He matriculated from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction and Cabinetmaking. He also owned his own business, Small Construction, in Tuskegee, Alabama for a few years. Harry met Elizabeth Cleo Williams in high school in 1945. It was love at first sight. They married on November 22, 1952, and enjoyed a match in heaven until sunset in 2010. Harry and Elizabeth moved to Newark, Delaware in 1963. They subsequently started a household that included three boys and three girls: beginning with Harry, Jr., followed by Michael, David, Shawnya, Moncia, and Sarah. Harry taught Carpentry and Mathematics at Howard Vocational Technical School in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1963 - 1976. During the summers, Harry worked at Chrysler Motors in Newark, Delaware. He later worked at Hodgson Vocational Technical School in Glasgow, Delaware, from 1976 - 1991, when he retired. From the start, Harry was a devout family man who put a lot of quality time into raising his children. He took his family on annual vacations, supported their endeavors, and taught his children, extended family members, and friends invaluable life lessons. He was a mentor to his students. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Harry was an avid golfer, hunter, and sportsman. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Newark, Delaware, where he was a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Male Chorus, and provided spiritual leadership for American Baptist Men of Pennsylvania and Delaware. After his retirement, he used his talents for Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County from 1991 - 2006, building homes for low-income families. Harry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth W. Small; children, Harry Lee Small, Jr., Michael Leonard Small, Shawnya Elizabeth Small, Moncia Dennise Small, and Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Melissa Small; sister, Reverend Patricia Ann Small; sisters-in-laws, Berthene S. Small, Anita L. Johnson, Veronica E. Small, Lovern H. Small, Sandra Williams Means, and Betty Jean Mitchell; two grandsons, Mark Anthony Jackson and Ernest William Davis, III; two great grandchildren, Jacaria Imiya Jackson and Austin Remi Davis; and numerous relatives and friends. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, September 17, 2010 in the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, Delaware 19702 from 6pm - 8pm and again on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church, 215 East Delaware Avenue, Newark, Delaware 19711 from 10am - 11am. A service in celebration of Harry's life will be at 11am. The burial will be private.
