Hilda Elizabeth Church

Hilda Elizabeth Church, age 96, of New Castle, Delaware (formerly of Iron Springs, Pennsylvania) went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 3, 2024. She is the daughter of the late Alice Edna Wailes-McDannell and Joseph David Hadley. Hilda worked hard at various positions throughout her younger years. She found her true calling of taking care of others including younger brothers, nieces and nephews, her children, and even ailing loved ones. While overly shy as a young person, she blossomed into a social butterfly and loved on everyone she could. She was a member of First Baptist Church of New Castle for as long as her health allowed. She loved being a Sunday School Superintendent and sharing Jesus with many children and their families through the years. Her hobbies included doting on her family and collecting EVERYTHING! She enjoyed listening to and singing along with The Gaither Family, Lynda Randle, and Johnny Cash just to name a few. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, James Calvin Church, Sr. in 2007; husband, John Patrick Jordan in 1961; brothers: Louine Kenneth Wailes, Joseph David Hadley, Paul Sheridan McDannell, William Samuel McDannell, Leonard Vernon McDannell; and sister, Alverta Jane Hadley. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Hilda Elizabeth and David Todd Piatt; son, James Calvin Church, Jr.; grandchildren, Samantha Elyse and Michael Wayne Latham II; great-grandchildren, Alexandria Grace Latham and Michael Wayne Latham III; sisters-in-law: JoAnn Annas, Juanita Church, and Phyllis McDannell; brothers-in-law, Steve Annas and Keith Daniel; and many nieces (including her beloved Pamela DegliObizzi), nephews, cousins, and friends. Hilda's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Christiana Care Home Health, Christiana Hospital, Cadia of Pike Creek, Compassionate Care, and Dee Williams (family friend and caregiver to many). A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 9:30-11 AM followed by a celebration of Hilda’s life at 11 AM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, Delaware 19702.
