Joan L. Wood

Joan L. Wood, age 83, of Newark, DE, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Joan worked in retail for most of her life and retired from Boscovs as Manager of the Ladies Coats and Dresses Department after 28 years of dedicated service. She was loved by co-workers and customers alike. She was one of the mothers in the church who was well loved and a faithful attendee of Eden International Church, Smyrna Delaware. led by Apostle Jared O'Jackson and Pastor Tyshee O'Jackson. Because of her devotion to God, she loved to pray for people and share the Lord Jesus with them. Joan enjoyed gardening and kept a beautiful flower garden at her home. Because of her love of flowers, especially orchids, she always looked forward to trips to Longwood Gardens. Joan also enjoyed family outings to Bombay Hook, as she had a great knowledge of, and fondness for, wildlife. Joan was an excellent cook and baker and looked forward to gathering with family and friends for holidays and birthdays. She was fond of crossword puzzles and word searches; she was an avid reader and spent a lot of time reading her Bible; and she enjoyed watching her favorite television shows. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Joan is survived by her children: Leslie Ellingsworth, Kathleen Krakowski (John), Bonnie Malloy (Thomas), and Keith Mako (Patti); grandchildren: Tara Babka (Chad), LeeAnn Freuler (Thomas), Nathan Krakowski (Stacey), Colleen Strehlau (Matthew), and Brenna Malloy; great-grandchildren: Cole, Kinsley, Jude, Brooklyn (daughter of Sherry Leonard), Dorian, and Sophie; and niece: Lori Manuel (Phil). She was preceded in death by her parents: William and Doris Hopkins; husbands: Albert W. Mako and Donald R. Wood; son-in-law: Steve Ellingsworth; sister and brother-in-law: Jean and Jake Hardy; and nephew: Kirk Hardy. A visitation will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 1-1:30 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702, followed by a service in celebration of Joan’s life at 1:30 PM. There will be a reception after the Celebration of Life which will be announced at the end of the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to your favorite charity in Joan’s memory.
