John "Sean" Joseph Delaney IV

John “Sean” Joseph Delaney IV of Middletown, Delaware passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. He was born in Wilmington, DE on April 20, 1956 to the late John “Jack” Joseph Delaney III and Mary Patricia “Pat” Delaney (Kearney). When Jack decided he would be named John Joseph Delaney IV, Pat declared, “You can name him John, but I’m calling him Sean.” Thus, he is known as: John, Sean, Dad, Papa Bear, Daddio, Uncle Sean, Uncle Shoopy, and Granda. Sean grew up the oldest of 6 in a large Irish – Catholic family, and he graduated from Salesianum High School. Later he attended Goldey – Beacom college, where he met his bride of 40 years. He wed Mary Hope (Holland) Delaney on May 22, 1982, and together they built a family of 4 children and 8 grandchildren. He had a full career as a carpenter with Local 626, retiring at age 55. He also utilized his carpentry skills first by building his home and later by investing in his community and loved ones. He was raised an avid Eagles fan, cheering on his team with his dad and siblings, and he extended the fandom to his children – go Birds! He was a skilled card shark, teaching his children to play poker at age eight. He loved God, and would often be found memorizing Bible verses, leading a Bible study, or sharing theological beliefs with others. Sean was a skillful writer. He authored the book Weapon of a Warrior, and would write for fun in his spare time. He wrote stories about his colorful childhood, composed nighttime stories for his children and grandchildren, and penned poems and short stories. He even wrote and sang ditties about many loved ones as a way to tease them. In fact, he never let the chance to play a good prank go to waste, big or small. He was survived by his wife, Mary Hope Delaney; his children, Meghan Dillon (Scott), John Delaney V (Carrissa), Peter Delaney, and Emily Delaney; his siblings, Patrick Delaney, Mary Ryan (James), Thomas Delaney (Teresa), Barbara Wisniewski (Michael), and Michael Delaney; his grandchildren, Angela, Jack, Rachel, Mark, Penny, Lila, Elanor, and McKenna; and a host of relatives, too many to name. Family and friends are invited to visit from 6-8 pm on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at the Strano-Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd, Newark, DE 19702. A second viewing will take place at Life House Church, 101 Karins Blvd, Townsend, DE 19734 on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 10 –11 am with the funeral service to follow. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
