Joseph P. Zelano II

Joseph P Zelano II, 65, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15th. Born July 29th, 1960, and a graduate of William Penn High School’s class of 1978, Joe was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Joe had a long and prolific career as a softball coach, which was his passion and joy. Often described as a hard-nosed, old-school coach, he led his teams to numerous league championships. Other hobbies of his included bowling as a young man, researching family history, and Fantasy Football. He organized and ran several fantasy football leagues for many years and was always happy to talk about strategy and gamesmanship with his fellow players. Music was also a huge part of his life. The self-professed “DJ Rockin’ Hippie” took great pride in his musical collection and knowledge, and happily put great amounts of time and effort into running multiple Facebook music pages and preparing musical playlists for every occasion and holiday. Joe was also a man of great faith in God and love of his church and its community, often volunteering his time for services or events. Joe’s biggest source of pride in life though were his grandchildren. Nothing put a bigger smile on his face than hearing of their accomplishments, bragging about them while showing off their pictures, and having them visit him. His health didn’t always allow him to be present at every event, but he was always there in spirit, and couldn’t wait to call and hear about any and every detail he wasn’t able to see. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond P Zelano and Donna F Breeding; and wife, Terrie Zelano. He is survived by his children, Jennifer McCarthy and Rocky Zelano; grandchildren: Kasey McCarthy, Taylor Shoemaker, Kayla Zelano, and Anthony Zelano; brother, Raymond Zelano; and other extended family members. A visitation will be held Friday, March 13, 2026, from 11 AM-12 Noon Faith Lutheran Church, 2265 Red Lion Rd., Bear, DE 19701 followed by a memorial service in celebration of Joe’s life at 12 Noon.
