Kevin John Kelleher

Kevin John Kelleher, age 74, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, surrounded by his family following a brief medical setback. Born on February 20, 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts, Kevin was a longtime resident of Wilmington, Delaware. Kevin will be most remembered for his deep love for his family. He cherished family events and took great joy in catching up with his brothers and hearing about the lives of his many nieces, nephews, and their children. A devoted "super uncle," he loved participating in holiday gatherings and was known for the "shenanigans" that ensued while helping the children assemble and figure out how their new gifts worked. His regular phone calls to his mother in her later years were a constant source of comfort and high spirits for her. Kevin’s professional career was a testament to his technical brilliance. After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, he joined DuPont, where he eventually retired as a Consultant Engineer. Kevin was a gifted problem solver, frequently tasked with fixing complicated machinery and resolving manufacturing issues that others could not. One of his proudest achievements was the structural design of a competition three-spoke “composite” bicycle wheel. Using state-of-the-art analytical models and structural tests that he devised, he created a high-strength design for the aerodynamic wheel that was used in Tour de France time trials, featured in a 1990 Bicycling Magazine article, and is currently displayed in the Specialized Headquarters Cycling Museum. An avid cyclist and enthusiast of all things mechanical, Kevin spent countless hours optimizing his bikes, cars and motorcycles. He raced a vintage Triumph GT6, a turbocharged Porsche 924, and a twin-turbo Mazda RX-7, as well as a Triumph T160 motorcycle. He was a fearless competitor, known for wearing his motorcycle foot pegs down to 45-degree edges from leaning into corners, and he earned many awards for his racing. Additionally, he was an accomplished guitar player who enjoyed playing his vintage Gibson classical and Fender bass guitars. Though his physical activities were curtailed in his mid-50s by a chronic pain syndrome, Kevin remained resilient. He maintained his loving family connections and his passion for motorsports, often sketching course maps for Formula 1 events and following NASCAR and professional sports closely. He found great joy in long conversations with his brothers, with whom he shared many of these interests. Raised in Medfield, Massachusetts, Kevin was predeceased by his parents, Louise D. and Harry A. Kelleher. He is survived by his five brothers: Dr. Michael (Catherine) Kelleher of Naples, FL; Brian Kelleher of Stockton, CA; Paul (Margaret) Kelleher of Los Altos, CA; Peter (Stephanie) Kelleher of Mount Pleasant, SC; and James (Mona) Kelleher of Lake Oswego, OR.
