Lelo M. La Tegola

Lelo M. La Tegola, age 60, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 5, 2026 in New York, USA. He was a beloved brother, father, husband and friend whose loss is deeply felt by all who knew him. Born on April 21, 1965 in Thika, Kenya to Michael La Tegola and Lucy Nyambura La Tegola, Lelo was raised in a loving family environment that shaped his values of kindness, generosity and respect for others. From an early age, he was known for his sharp wit, warm personality and genuine love for people. Lelo was baptized in the Catholic Church and remained steadfast in his faith throughout his life. He attended General Kago Primary School in Thika from 1972 to 1978 and later proceeded to Kanunga High School where he completed his sixth form studies. From 1984 to 1986, he attended Kenya Polytechnic and earned a Diploma in Statistics. He worked for the Kenya Bureau of Statistics for several years before pursuing his passion for sports. Lelo later served as a sports coach at Ecole Francaise, the French International School in Nairobi, where he was admired for his dedication and deeply loved by the children he coached. In 1995, Lelo relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in the United States where he joined many of his childhood friends. He worked as a self-employed driver in various capacities until his passing. Lelo touched the lives of many through his generosity, dedication and uplifting spirit. He leaves behind his beloved children Hans Macharia, Lisa, Remy La Tegola, Hans Michael, Bella Nyambura and Leon Michael. He is survived by his siblings Karanja Mwangi, Jane Wanjiru, Robert Mwaniki, Maria Angela Waithera, Leda Wanjiku and Franco Mwangi. He was a cherished uncle to his nephews Toni Mwangi, Michael Thumbi, Dennis Mwangi and Nick Mwaniki Chirey, and his nieces Caroline Gathoni, Sylvia Nyambura, Natasha Nyambura, Sandra Nyambura Chirey and Elaine Nyambura. Lelo was recently preceded in death by the beloved mother of his son Remy. We pray that they both rest in eternal peace. Esther and Caroline, the mothers of his children, join family and friends in commemorating the life of their loved one. Lelo had a wide circle of friends and colleagues who mourn his passing. His warmth, laughter and wisdom will forever be remembered and cherished. To all who had the privilege of knowing Lelo, he will be remembered for the inspiration and joy he brought into their lives. Though he will be deeply missed, he will never be forgotten. A visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2026, from 9-11 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 345 Bear Christiana Rd., Newark, DE followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM.
