Louisa B. Sophy

Louisa B. Sophy, age 86, of Middletown, DE, formerly of New Castle, DE, and Malden, MA, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 12, 1938, in Malden, MA, Louisa's life was marked by family, love, and faith. After graduating from Malden High School, Louisa worked as a bank teller. During this time, she met her future husband, Anthony Sophy, at a US Navy dance (she loved how he looked in his uniform)! Louisa married the love of her life in 1963 and joyfully raised five children in Delaware. Although she re-entered the workforce when her youngest child started kindergarten, being a devoted homemaker remained her top priority. Louisa had an adventurous spirit and was naturally curious, pursuing a variety of new experiences like skiing, rock climbing, yoga, aerobics, and rollerblading. She had many hobbies and interests, including gardening, sewing, homeopathy, reading, crossword puzzles, camping, and vacationing in Fenwick Island, DE, with her family. Louisa especially enjoyed attending dinner theater and jitterbugging with her husband. She also had a deep passion for animals, often taking in strays. As a woman of faith, she attended church regularly, sang in the church choir, and assisted in Sunday school. In her later years, Louisa cherished her time at the MOT Senior Center Mind Matters Program, making many friends, enjoying crafting, playing BINGO, and going on fun outings. She treasured quality family moments with her children and grandchildren and looked forward to monthly lunch dates with her sisters-in-law. Louisa was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, Anthony P. Sophy; her parents, Florence and Dennis; her sister, Dolly; and brothers, Dennis and Bruce. Louisa's memory lives on through her children: Peter Sophy (Tamara), David Sophy, Mark Sophy (Stacy), Patricia McNair (James), and Anthony Sophy Jr.; her grandchildren: Anthony, Noelle (Brendan), Zakary, Jakob, Taylor, and Tyler; and her siblings, Kevin and Teddy. She is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the MOT Senior Center Mind Matters Group and Dr. Huy Le, her longtime primary care physician. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mind Matters Group at MOT Senior Center at 300 South Scott St., Middletown, DE 19709. A visitation will be held Friday, October 18, 2024, from 10 AM– 11 AM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702, followed by a celebration of Louisa’s life from 11 AM – 12 PM.
