Marie M. McFarlin

Marie McDonald McFarlin, born on January 26, 1948, in Springfield, PA, was sent to her eternal home peacefully on December 21, 2025 surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of faith, laughter, and quiet but powerful service to others. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Marie was a devoted wife to her husband, Ed, with whom she shared 49 beautiful years of marriage. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, and family while living in Bear, DE. She was a proud and devoted mother to her son, Ted, and a loving “Momma M” to his wife Moira. Her greatest joy came from being “Nana” to her four beloved grandchildren—William, Reese, Paige, and Drew—who filled her heart beyond measure. She is survived by her brother, James McDonald (Kathy), and sister Barbara Burke (Tom), and enjoyed her role as “Aunt Re Re” to her nieces and nephews. She is reunited in heaven with her mother, Genevieve and father, Charles. Marie dedicated nearly 40 years to teaching, where she was a passionate advocate for special education and a tireless supporter of students who needed an extra voice, extra patience, and extra love. Teaching was never just a profession for Marie—it was a calling. Her compassion, kindness, and belief in every child left an indelible mark on countless families and colleagues. Her commitment to children extended beyond the classroom. Marie was a familiar and enthusiastic presence at her son’s school events and activities at Ursuline Academy, St. Edmond’s Academy, and Salesianum School-- always ready to volunteer, lend a hand, or cheer at soccer, basketball, track, and golf sidelines. A woman of deep Catholic faith, Marie was an active and beloved member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. She served in many roles over the years and was affectionately known as the parish’s “Chief Liturgy Officer”—a title that perfectly captured both her dedication and her joyful spirit. Her faith was lived not loudly, but faithfully, generously, and with grace. Marie’s educational journey began at Holy Cross in Springfield, Pennsylvania, and The School of the Holy Child in Sharon Hill. She went on to earn degrees from West Chester University and the University of Delaware, accomplishments she held with quiet pride. To know Marie was to love Marie. Those who knew Marie will remember her infectious laugh, radiant smile, and the warmth she brought into every room. Kindness and compassion were not just qualities she possessed—they were the signature of her life. Marie’s legacy lives on in her family, her students, her parish community, and all who were blessed to know her. Her life was a beautiful example of faith in action, love in abundance, and joy freely given. May she rest in eternal peace, embraced by God’s love, and may her memory continue to be a blessing to all. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Marie on Sunday, December 28, 2025 from 6-8 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 starting at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear Christiana Rd., Bear, DE 19701. Burial will take place on Friday, January 2, 2026 at 10 AM at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
