Mary F. Simpson

Mary F. Simpson passed this earth on May 4, 2023 at age 87. Mary was a well-known member of the New Castle community having operated Campers Corner and the Bike Barn with her husband Richard for over 30 years, on School Lane opposite the Wilmington Airport. A 1953 graduate of Coolidge High School in Washington DC. She met the love of her life in a roller-skating rink in 1954. They were married in 1955. Mary was a homemaker to her 5 children. Twins Carl & Arthur, Susan, Patricia and Scott. Many afternoons the house would be full of the neighborhood children and Mary would read stories or play games and listen to story records with them. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and camping. She enjoyed camping with her family as they traveled and camped from Canada to Florida to the Mississippi River. After retiring in 1996 Richard and her traveled the United States and Canada in their big red Ford truck and 5th wheel trailer. They have visited all 50 States including a 4 1/2 month, 16,500 mile trip to Alaska and most Provinces in Canada in their years of traveling and camping. She loved cruising and they visited most of the islands in the Caribbean, Panama, Hawaii and Alaska. Their love of dancing was a highlight of their 67 years of marriage. On of the best nights was dancing to Tex Beneke’s Big Band Orchestra for hours. For over 30 years they spent the winters in Silver Springs Florida, making friends from many cold weather states and Canada. Mary is survived by her husband of 67 years, Richard; sons: Carl, Arthur, and Scott Simpson; daughters, Susan Hurst (Arthur Hurst) and Patricia Hearn; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, all living in New Castle County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Charles Fague of Washington DC; and sisters: Hester Oaks of Atlanta Ga., Charlene Harell, Becky Harrow both from Baltimore Md. and grandchildren, Sandi and Bryon Hearn of Brandywine Hundred. Friends and family of Mary are invited to attend a visitation that will be held Friday, May 12, 2023, from 2-3 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a memorial service in celebration of Mary’s life at 3 PM. Interment will be private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
