Michael Jerry Barnett "Mike"

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Jerry Barnett, 61, of Bear, Delaware, on January 11, 2025. Mike passed away peacefully at his beloved home of 30 years. Born on January 5, 1964, in Wilmington, Delaware, Mike grew up in Faulkland Heights and graduated from McKean High School in 1982. After a successful 35-year career with DuPont, Mike recently retired, having built a life full of personal and professional accomplishments. Mike was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He loved tending to his yearly summer garden, where he took great pride in growing vegetables to create his famous homemade salsa. He was also a devoted fan of all Philadelphia sports teams and the Fightin’ Blue Hens, often cheering on these teams with unmatched enthusiasm, whether watching games at home or attending live events with family. Sports were an important part of Mike’s life from his youth, as he played football for both the Stanton Clippers in middle school and the McKean Highlanders in high school. His love for athletics continued into adulthood, where he enjoyed supporting his daughters, Ashley and Megan, as they played basketball, softball, and volleyball. Mike was incredibly proud of their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent at their games. Mike’s summers were filled with time spent at the beach, creating memories with his family, and with his annual camping trips to Ontario, Canada, where he spent his days fishing, and his nights being surrounded by loved ones at the campfire. Above all, Mike was devoted to his family. His warmth, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Kristi; his daughters, Ashley and Megan; his parents, Lynne and Jerry Barnett; his sister, Donna (Jimmy) Tearl; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 10-11 AM, at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE. A celebration of Mike’s life will begin at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike’s memory to Ducks Unlimited. Mike will be remembered for his kind spirit, his unwavering love for his family, and his passion for life’s simple joys—from his beach trips to his favorite sports teams. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
