Michael Richard Melancon

Michael Richard Melancon, age 30, of Bear, Delaware went home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2025. Michael was a beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend to many. Michael was born and raised in Delaware and had a huge interest in playing baseball throughout his life. He began playing baseball at a young age in the Bear Babe Ruth League and continued at Saint Peter’s grade school, Saint Mark’s High School, and with Stahl Post American Legion baseball. He continued his education at Wilmington University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. His hard work in school led him to be employed with DOT Foods, Inc, his most recent employer, which he worked as a Warehouse Material Handler for almost 2 years. A huge part of his childhood included going to his family’s fishing home in Wachapreague, VA, a place that included no cell phone service, carnivals, fishing for flounder, and family dinners…a perfect place to just be a kid. These trips would include card and board games during rainy vacation days or after a big family dinner of cooking fresh fish. Michael would make it a competition of who could catch the biggest flounder. He also had a winning streak when playing board games or cards. Whether it was Skip-Bo, Uno, Monopoly, the card game War, Go Fish or Bingo, he would always get the lucky card or play savvy enough to be unbeatable. He also loved driving on the beach with family on the surf. The family would get together and have a big cookout while enjoying surf fishing. Michael would always see how many sand crabs he could catch and enjoyed wave surfing or boogie boarding. In the winter months he would enjoy hunting with his dad or snowboarding with close friends. To know Michael, was to know he had a heart of gold. He always had a calm demeanor with sense of humor and a warm smile. He enjoyed watching the Phillies game and eating ice cream with his grandmother and helped her with her lawn and things around the house. He had a tender side with children which he displayed with his niece and nephew. Whether it was playing horses with his niece Gracie, or teaching his nephew Mikey how to hit a baseball from a tee, he was always so patient and kind with them and all children. He also had a love for animals, and especially shared a love for cats with his mom. There were several cats that lived in the same household and although he wouldn’t have considered himself a cat lover at first, the cats didn’t give him a choice and he loved them right back, because that’s what he did. There were many times where he helped a person in need who was less fortunate, and he never asked for anything in return. His actions were truly from the heart and he loved to help people. He was sympathetic, understanding and would truly give the shirt off his back to anyone that needed it. Those moments and actions really summarized his character and giving heart. Michael was deeply loved and will be forever missed. Michael is survived by his parents, Barbara (Conlan) Melancon and Michael J. Melancon; his sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Michael Kitts; his grandmother, Joanne Melancon; and his niece and nephew, Gracie Mae Kitts and Michael Graham Kitts III; along with a host of extended family and friends. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents: Melvin Melancon, and Virginia and Richard Conlan. Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Friday, June 27, 2025 from 9 to 11 AM at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702.
