Patricia A. Winans

Patricia A. Winans, 80 years young, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024. Native to Delaware. Pat and Jim Vorous married and had four children, Audrey, Debbie, Jim Jr and Terry. Pat was a homemaker and worked to help support the family at National Vulcanized Fibers. Pat remained good friends with many girlfriends from school. After sixteen years of marriage, divorced from Jim Sr., she met and fell in love with John Trala who cared for her and help mentor and nurture her children. Pat took pride in decorating her home for every season. She had a talent for crafts, ceramics, crocheting, drawing and painting to mention a few. Pat and John were both members of the 7th Avenue VFW - Patriotic and proud Americans. They loved dancing to oldies and polkas. Pat played on a shuffleboard league with the VFW. Pat and John lived in an apartment above her mother, Florence, and her brother, Tommy. She was very close to her mother and loved her dearly. Time passed and so did her mother and John. Both losses hard hits to her heart. Some time after NVF closed, Pat found work paying out slot winners at Delaware Park until retirement. Then her life shifted to being a member of the Newark Moose and she even tended bar there part time. Still a member of VFW in Newark. Always the competitor, Pat played cards weekly, or dice games and Racko among any other games anyone wanted to try. She gave her competitors a challenge to win games from her. Pat could and did make lifelong friends with people standing in the same line at the grocery store. She cared for every cat that came to her for help, love and food. Often buying food for them before herself. She was kind and loving, but shrewd. Pat was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Carter; younger sister, Kathleen Cannon; younger brother, Thomas Slaughter, Jr.; her love, John Trala; husband, Gene Winans; and her grandson, Murphy Burns. She is survived by her daughters, Audrey Urban (Jeff Pyle) and Debbie Diggins; and sons, Jim Vorous, Jr (Kam) and Terry Vorous. Loved by her grandchildren: Chase Urban, Shane Vorous, Michael Diggins II, Victoria Cortez (Bryan), Jessica Thompson and Kristin Thompson (Chris); and twelve great grandchildren; Her nephew, Mark Harrison, who helped Pat in many ways the last few years. Thank you so much. Pat’s cousin, Janet Weaver (Jim); their adult children: Kathy, Jim and Wendy; and niece, Melissa Fairies. She had many cherished friends and still one friend from school, Dollie Burns. Pat was loved and will be missed by many. A visitation will be held Friday January 3, 2025, from 10:30 AM - 12 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a service in celebration of Pat’s life at 12 Noon.
