Philip Okwudishu

Sir Ogbueshi Philip Okwudishu, age 71, of Bear, DE went home to be with the Lord on October 15, 2016. He was born on June 10, 1938 to the late Diokpa Joseph Ojegbu and Madam Mgbolieze Mary Okwudishu. He had his primary education and modern school education in Okpanam and Ibusa respectively. He also completed a correspondence course with foreign school where he obtained his Associate degree. Philip became a teacher and taught for a few years at Iseleuku and Nsukwa. He left the teaching profession and joined the police force in 1965. Throughout his career with the police force, he was in the signals department. He retired after 35 years as the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the year 2000. In 2003 he moved to Delaware from Nigeria and frequently traveled back to visit family. Philip and his family were active at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church; his commitment to God grew with each passing day. As a devout Catholic, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed watching Catholic TV shows. Philip was a sprinter and soccer player in his youth and enjoyed following professional soccer throughout his life. His favorite leisure activity was reading his Bible. Philip was a wise, kind, humble and loving patriarch. Known as a leader in the community, he was honored and respected as a peacemaker, mediator, and respectful communicator. The memory of his love for God, soft spoken advice, and emphasis on the importance of family ties will be forever treasured. Philip is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Justina Uzo Okwudishu; their seven children: Gloria Ofuani, Kanayo Okwudishu, Judy Mordi, Emeka Okwudishu, Williams Okwudishu, Ebohaiwe Okwudishu, and Stanley Okwudishu; son-in-law, Andrew Mordi, daughters-in-law, Christy and Nneka Okwudishu; grandchildren: Justin, Jude, Osita, Tobe, and Martha and Wumi Ofuani; Somto, Togor, and Ify Jigide; and Ifechukwumelim, Awele, Ekene, Fumnanyi, Ebube, Simchia, and Chimzim Okwudishu; and twin great grandchildren, Medua and Chizara Ofuani. His family accepts the will of God with a heavy heart but they take great solace in the wonderful memories they shared over the years. Philip’s legacy of love will live on in his family until they are reunited in Heaven. Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, November 19, from 5-6:30 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 345 Bear Christiana Road, Bear, DE 19701.
