Samuel W. La Corte "Poppy" Newark, DE – Samuel W. La Corte, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024. Born December 1, 1947 in Bagheria, Sicily, to the late Petrina Zarcone and Joseph La Corte, Sam's life was a testament of dedication, valor, and love. Sam was a distinguished Marine who proudly served his country in both the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. His 30-year career in the Marine Corps was marked by bravery and numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. His unwavering commitment to service and his esteemed role as a Sergeant Major reflect his exceptional contributions to his country. After his military career, Sam continued to serve others through his work with the Paralyzed Veterans Association, where he was both a member and past President of the Colonial Chapter in Newark, DE. His advocacy for veterans, particularly those with disabilities, was a significant part of his life’s work. Sam’s dedication to learning led him to graduate from Wilmington University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management, where he was honored as a member of the Honor Society. His pursuit of education reflected his lifelong commitment to personal growth and excellence. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Petrina Zarcone and Joseph La Corte, and his daughter, Carla Michels. Sam is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Dr. Apostle Carol Michels-La Corte; his sons Anthony La Corte and Joseph La Corte (Greg Lagola); his daughters Rena Noonan (EJ Noonan), Jamie Michels (Bri Jones); his sisters Catherine Knop, Teresa Maunz; his brother Carl Zarcone; his grandchildren Michail Noonan (Shelly Noonan) Michael Noll, Joshua Noonan (Jessica Noonan), Andrew Noll (Alyssa McAillister) Ryan Noonan (Kelly Noonan), Kyle Noll (Victoria Noll), Christopher La Corte (Sarah La Corte), Tyler Noll (Emalee Noll), Jolynn Smith, Jaslynn Sakowski, Alexandria La Corte, Jianna Cabrera, Joeli Cabrera; his great-grandchildren Gabi Noll, Brayden Noonan, Kellin Noll, Beckett Noonan, Travis Noonan, Riley Noll, Eliza Noll, Benjamin Noonan, Odin La Corte, Ashton Noll; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Sam, who was adoringly called "Poppy" by not only his grandchildren, but by everyone who knew him, will be remembered for his love of Dunkin Donuts coffee, "sammiches", humor, generosity, and wisdom. His role as an Elder and Sound man in his church exemplified his faith and commitment to his community. Known for his love of gadgets, fixing anything, fishing, playing games of all sorts, and his adventurous spirit as he navigated Newark, De in his power wheelchair. Even in his final days, Sam's extraordinary gift for making people laugh and his comforting presence were a source of joy to everyone around him. His warm hugs, endless wisdom, and captivating stories will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our memories with him will forever be treasured and cherished. A visitation will be held Monday, August 12, 2024, from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702 followed by a celebration of Sam's life at 11:30 AM.
