Shirley Marcella Green

Shirley M. Green, daughter of the Late Aldrich Little and the Late Iona Watson-Giles, was born on April 25, 1938, in Mt. Pleasant, DE. She transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the St. Francis Hospital. Shirley received her early education at Kenton School, #140 in Kenton, DE. She attended Booker T. Washington Middle School in Dover, DE and then on to graduate from Howard High School in Wilmington, DE. After graduation from High School, she took Culinary Arts Classes at Delaware Technical and Community College where she received an Associates Degree in this area. For the most part, Shirley was employed at the Episcopal Church Home as the Head of Culinary. She worked in this capacity for many years. Later in life, she became an employee of Vital Statistics in the State of Delaware. She continued this until her health no longer permitted her to do so. Shirley met and was joined in Holy Matrimony to John J. Green and from this union, three children were born, Anthony D. Watson, Tomasina I. Green, and Jonathan B. Green. Shirley’s hobbies were going to Bingo, traveling, cooking, and singing Gospel. She was a long time member of 50 plus years of New Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served in several capacities. She was an Usher, she served as a Nurse on the Healthcare team, a member of the Morgan Chorus where she held the office of President for quite a number of years as well as the Mass Choir also serving as President. She taught the young ladies of this ministry how to dress appropriately when in singing ministry, ie. No large earrings, shoulder covered, stockings to be worn, and no dress above the knees. Wow!!! That was the rule then and still remains until this very day. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23. Shirley was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was especially fond of JaBria Green, Journey Green, and Nadira Green with whom she spent a lot of her time. Her Husband John, Son, Anthony, and her only sister, Lowan Watson, her adopted Daughter, Carolyn Gooden, and her Brother, Melvin Little, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her most precious memories, her daughter, Tomasina Green; her son, Jonathan Green, two adopted daughters, Diane Gooden, and ShaJuan Gooden, two brothers, Morgan Little and Marty Little; a devoted granddaughter with whom she lived, Latonya Green; a devoted great grandson, Derrick Palmer; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, a devoted niece, Shiree Watson; three cousins, Joyce Collins, Janice Watson, and Larry Watson; a devoted friend, Shirley Barbour; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. A visitation will be held Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 9-11 AM in New Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1402 N. Market St., Wilmington, DE 19801 followed by a service in celebration of Shirley's life at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
