Tommie Otis Davis

Tommie O. Davis, 99, of Newark, Delaware, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, while under hospice care at Christiana Hospital. Tommie was born on March 6, 1924, to the late Richard D. and Gladys R. (Toney) Davis in Carlisle, West Virginia. As a young boy, Tommie enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Tommie joined the United States Army, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in Alaska with the 18th Combat Engineers. After World War II had concluded, Tommie remained in Alaska and assisted in the construction of the Alcan Highway. Tommie was proud to serve in the U.S. Army in the defense of his country. Tommie retired from Chrysler Parts Plant, in Newark, after 30 years of service. In 1944, he met his wife Garnette, and the two were joined in marriage on January 11, 1946, in Kincaid, West Virginia. Tommie valued his large family, that consisted of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tommie loved the outdoors and could often be seen sitting on his front porch with family and friends. Tommie was predeceased by his wife of almost 63 years, Garnette, in 2008. Additionally, he was predeceased by his son-in-law, Leroy T. Hubbs Sr., his daughter-in-law, Jody Davis, and grandchildren, Ryan Martin and Joshua Davis. Tommie is survived by his children: Richard (Cindy) Davis, of Newark, DE, Brenda Hubbs, of Millsboro, DE, Sharon (Darrell) Cook, of Walker, LA, Jacob (Jan) Davis, of Newark, DE, and Joseph Davis, of Newark, DE. He was also survived by 10 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and neighborhood friends. Family and friends are invited to attend Tommie’s viewing and service on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Strano & Feeley Funeral Home, 635 Churchman’s Road, Newark, Delaware, from 2-3 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Interment will be private.
