Vera L. Meier

Vera Meier, age 92, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 19, 2014. She died peacefully at home. In addition to seeing the Lord she served, she was also reunited with her hubby, Bud, whom she had missed dearly since he passed two years ago. She was born in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ and grew up in Avon. Her early years were spent a few blocks from the beach and she would often tell stories of walking to the beach. She was very active and loved playing soccer in the street or basketball. She learned to play the trumpet inhigh school. She graduated from what was then Eastern Bible Institute (now Valley Forge Christian College) where she played her trumpet with a travelling group. She worked as a secretary in the New Jersey schools, and in the summers worked in her cousin’s restaurant.After getting married to Vernon Meier (1922 – 2012), she moved to Delaware where he had a teaching job. She was a homemaker for thirteen years and then began working in the Christina School District, first as a secretary in the Guidance Department at Christiana High School and then at the Data Service Center, from which she retired. Vera loved the Lord and has been a Christian since the age of 5. She was very active in her church growing up. For the past thirty years she has faithfully attended Five Rivers Church in Elkton, MD and was involved in the Prime Timer ministry there. She and her husband grew to love the ministry of the Gaither’s and would delight in watching their videos. Vera loved her family and was happiest when she was with them. She was always ready to join in any fun activity at a moment’s notice. Family gatherings were a highlight, especially at Christmas time. Her joyful spirit was contagious, as she loved planning and preparing for the holidays when all the family would gather together to celebrate, someas far as Colorado and Tennessee. She was very proud of her eleven grandchildren and supported them in their extracurricular activities. Vera loved the beach! Joining together for the annual family vacation in Rehoboth was something she looked forward to, and she was always one of the first to dive into a wave. And when we went to Funland in the evenings, look out! She was the skee ball champ! Another activity she really enjoyed was doing puzzles. She also loved to play games, and playing Parcheesi with her grandkids was a highlight. She and Bud would spend many evenings playing Skip-Bo together and more recently, she busied herself with Word Search puzzles. She will be dearly missed by her children: Ron Meier (Robin) from Littleton, Colorado; Dave Meier (Lisa) from Smyrna, Tennessee; Joyce Morgan (Gary) from Rising Sun, Maryland; and Joan Thorp (Wade) from Bear, Delaware; grandchildren: Rachel (Stephen), Hannah, Joel, Annie, Jeff, Jeremy, Jill (Stephen), Jordan, Lauren (Christopher), Todd, and Ross; and two great-grandchildren, Celo Ridgely and Jasen Meier. The celebration service will be held at 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 27th at Five Rivers Church, 290 Whitehall Road, Elkton, MD. The family will receive friends from 3:30-5:00 PM. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Missions Department at Five Rivers Church. The family would like to thank Comfort Keepers for the excellent care they provided.
