Alice C. Staker Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Alice Catherine Staker, age 83, formerly of Bear, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, June 6, 2022 surrounded by her family at Millcroft Skilled Nursing Healthcare Center, Newark, DE. Alice was born June 28, 1938, in Wilmington, DE, to the late Vincent Zych and Madeline Martin. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Sid Staker. She grew up in Golts, MD and Kirkwood, DE. She married Sid in 1956 and they resided at the Quantico Marine Corp Base in Quantico, VA during his enlistment. At the conclusion of Sid’s military service, the couple moved to Delaware to raise their family. Alice graduated from Delaware City High School in 1956. During high school she was on the Girls Varsity basketball team. While working full-time for the Colonial School District managing the William Penn High School cafeterias and maintaining a busy household with four young children she attended Delaware Technical College, Newark, DE graduating with a degree in Nutrition. Following losing her eyesight at the young age of 37 years old she was determined to continue to live a vibrant life and went on to have a very successful career with the Delaware Division for the Visually Impaired ultimately overseeing dining & hospitality for Delmarva Power & Light, Christiana, DE. Through her lifetime Alice was active in her community. She was a member of the Delaware Twin Club, a Girl Scout leader, the Bear Ladies Club and volunteered with numerous organizations that her children were involved in. Additionally, after losing her eyesight, Alice was an active member of the Cornerstone Senior Center where she created many beautiful watercolor paintings, crafts and ceramic pieces, many of which won awards over the years at the Delaware State Fair. Despite her hectic schedule, family and friends were Alice’s passion and delight. In her earlier years she loved going camping and going on vacations with her family and traveling with her husband after retirement. She enjoyed hosting her family, especially during holidays and the summertime pool parties. Alice loved to cook and bake. You could always find her making an abundance of food for family gatherings. Alice was a lifeguard when she was a teenager and loved to swim. She took pride in teaching each of her children and grandchildren how to swim. Alice cherished her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them making crafts and having fun adventures. Alice is survived by her children, Theresa McCune, of Wilmington, DE, John Staker (Cynthia) of Smyrna, DE, Carrie Staker-Jones (Robert) of Bear, DE, and Sherri Fromal (Dennis) of Middletown, DE; nine grandchildren, four step grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One of fifteen children, Alice is also survived by three sisters and two brothers, as well as a number of other loving relatives and close friends. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 11:30 AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazer Rd., Newark, DE. Friends may call at the church from 10:30 to 1130 AM. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Bear. The family wishes to thank the Millcroft Skilled Nursing Healthcare Center staff who took great care of her over the years and Hospice during her last days.
