February 2, 1942 - July 31, 2021
Audrey M. Jacobs, age 79, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2021. Her children were by her side, as they had been throughout her long, hard-fought, courageous battle with cancer. Audrey was born February 2, 1942, in Little Rock, AR to Jane Anderson and Chester Short. Audrey attended Wilmington High School and lived most of her life in Wilmington and Newark, Delaware. She worked as a cashier at Shoprite in Newark, an Avon representative, and after many years retired as a hostess for Oliver’s Restaurant at the Holiday Inn. Audrey was known for her green thumb and passion for gardening, she never met a plant or a flower she couldn’t nurture back to life or grow. She enjoyed many things in life that included trips back to Arkansas to attend family reunions, visits and attending special events with family and friends, classic country music, all things Elvis Presley (including a trip to Memphis and Tupelo in 2009), collecting angels, and surrounding herself with pictures of family, homemade gifts and sentimental keepsakes. Audrey will be forever known as authentic, thoughtful, genuine, caring, giving, and compassionate. She also had a sense of humor, a kind and beautiful heart, and was a woman of strong conviction and character. Audrey loved, supported, and was an inspiration to so many throughout the course of her storied life - always there to give a lending hand or just her ear. Most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren - they were her heart, her soul, and her life. She felt so blessed to be a part of their lives…internalizing every smile, hug and kiss she received. It was her love of family that carried her through some of the most challenging moments of her fierce and courageous battle with cancer. When she felt like giving up, she always remembered why she was holding on. Her incredible strength, hope, faith also guided her along her journey. Audrey was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Jacobs; daughter, Deborah Smith; mother, Jane Anderson; father, Chester Short; and step-father, William Anderson. She is survived by her children, Sharon Michaels (Ronald Kuzminski) and Joseph Smith (Amy); grandchildren, Heather Michaels and Kyndra Helmick (Cody); and great-grandchildren: Emma Helmick, Charlotte Michaels, and Payton Helmick. Audrey is also survived by a sister, Winona Buso of Mesa, AZ, brother, Bill (Carolann) of Altoona, PA, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. A viewing will be held on August 9, 2021, from 10:00-11:00 am at the Strano and Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. A celebration of Audrey’s life will begin at 11:00. A webcast of the service will be available for those unable to attend: https/webcasts.lifetributes.com/1153119. Burial will immediately follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Audrey’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Center or the American Cancer Society.
