Gerald Claxton Grant Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Gerald Claxton Grant, age 88, of New Castle, DE passed away on July 12, 2022. Jerry was a kind and generous man who was devoted to his family. He was born in Mountain Creek, AL to the late Sadie and Edward F. Grant along with his 15 siblings. He grew up in Alabama and loved playing football in High school and at the University of Alabama. Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. His career as an iron worker brought Jerry to the east coast to work on the construction of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. He also worked in Philadelphia and throughout Delaware as an ironworker. It was here that he met and married his beloved wife, Lucy Popo Grant, and helped raise her five children as his own. Jerry had a great sense of humor and enjoyed joking and teasing with his family and friends. Jerry was known for his quick wit and classic comebacks. He was a major football fan and enjoyed every game from the preseason through championship games. His wife Lucy often teased him by saying she was a football widow. Jerry enjoyed being outdoors and loved time with family and friends cooking, grilling, and eating. Jerry will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his work ethic, and strong character. Jerry is survived by his children: Linda Bethard (Charles), Suzanne Hall, Margie Schwartz (George), John Machulski (Kristin), and Karen Quinn; his sister, Betty Ann Grant (Sam); grandchildren, Ashley Bethard (Matthew), Rachel Machulski, Maggie Machulski, Julia Machulski, Shay-Lee Hall, and Sydney Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Popo Grant; his parents and 14 siblings; and his grandsons, Zachary Schwartz and Andrew Bethard. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10-11 AM on Wednesday, July 20 at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. A memorial service in celebration of Jerry’s life will take place at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lori’s Hands, a local organization connecting volunteer college students with community members in need, 100 Discovery Blvd., 4th Floor, Newark, DE 19713.
