Harvey Lee Philhower, Sr, of Newark, Delaware, spent his 75 years making people smile with his love for his family, endless humor, quick wit, and of course the abundance of catchphrases he was so well known for. Harvey was the happiest surrounded by his loving wife, Karen, his children and grandchildren! But as everyone that knew him knows, he was in his glory coaching his sons in baseball, coaching softball at Fairwinds, and cheering at every Fairwinds Knights’ game. We will never forget his biggest heartfelt smiles that were so freely shared on Sunday mornings as he donned his “Candyman cap” and handed out lollipops to all the children. To know Harvey was to know the joy of a life rich in laughter and love, and it was a legacy that could be seen and felt as he went home to His Lord and Savior while surrounded by his family and closest friends on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 12:34 pm. Harvey began his life on June 3, 1946, in Elkton, Maryland. He was born to William (Bill) and Betty Philhower. He and his wife Karen were blessed to celebrate their 57 years of marriage in February this year. The couple raised their four sons in Newark while creating a lifetime of joy-filled memories. At the Howard L. Robertson firm in Wilmington, Harvey enjoyed a career that spanned an impressive 49 years. He was a land surveyor and partner in the firm where he retired as a Senior Survey Party Chief. Harvey also was a faithful servant of the Lord at his home church, Fairwinds Baptist, for over three decades. He was an earnest and steadfast deacon and for nearly 20 years he coached the Fairwinds’ softball teams with great passion and enthusiasm. Harvey had pride in each member of his family, and he loved them with all that he had and all that he was. Wednesday he joined his parents, Bill and Betty Philhower, sister Audrey Philhower, brother Clarence, brother Roger Philhower and sister Virginia “Sis” Rojas, his son John Philhower, and grandson Gavin Philhower in heaven. He leaves to celebrate his life his beautiful wife Karen Phipps Philhower; brother Bill Philhower, Betty Philhower, and Ed Philhower, his sons Robert Philhower, wife Laor, Bradley Philhower, and, JR Philhower, wife Jessie. Harvey was the proud grandfather to Adam Philhower, Rebecca Philhower, Dennis Harrell, Melisa Jean, Ethan Acord, Elson Acord, Sklyar Acord, Autumn Anslum, Bradley Anslum, Chance Philhower, Claudia Philhower, Evan Philhower, Donovan Hunter, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2022, from 9:30 – 11 am at Fairwinds Baptist Church, 801 Seymour Rd., Bear, DE 19701 followed by a service in celebration of his life at 11 am and then lunch and refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a memorial gift for the new gym floor at Fairwinds Christian School in honor of the countless days Harvey spent cheering on his favorite sports team.
