James Harlan

October 1, 1957 - January 16, 2021

James Marshall Harlan passed away peacefully on January 17, 2021, surrounded with love by his wife Carole, sister Judith, and stepdaughter Melissa. Jim is survived by his wife Carole (née Williams); sister Judith Quinn (née Harlan); stepchildren John Cregg (wife Susan), Scott Cloud (wife Kim), and Melissa Morse (née Cloud); grandchildren Ronnie, Brenden, Madison, Johnathan, and Zachary; and beloved cats Elliot, Solly, Scamp, Max, and Sasha. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betsy, and Marshall Harlan. Jim was born in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1957. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant Senior High School in 1975 and embarked on a career in retail management. Over the years he managed a drug store, a toy store, a charity store, and several types of furniture stores. Jim was a self-described “proud, bleeding-heart, liberal Democrat.” He loved to talk about politics and try to connect with folks of all political persuasions. He also loved history and genealogy. When one needed to know something about his family, or local history, Jim was the one to ask. He enjoyed British sitcoms, Far Side cartoons, and connecting with friends on social media. Jim was a bit of a cartoonist himself, leaving behind a couple of drawings his sister will always cherish. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on February 6th at Hanover Presbyterian Church, 1801 North Jefferson St., Wilmington, DE. COVID-19 restrictions will be observed. A video of the service will be available afterward and a link will be posted to Jim’s Facebook account. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jim's name to Faithful Friends Animal Shelter in Wilmington, Delaware.
