Judith Alison Jones

Judith Alison (McClatchie) Jones, age 81, resident at 1817 ½ Capitol Trail, Newark DE, passed away on February 28, 2024, from in her home. Born on January 12, 1943, at Syracuse General Hospital in upstate New York, Judy and her family attended the Alliance Church where she learned about Jesus. At age ten, she received Christ as Savior at a Billy Graham campaign., After hearing a message from A. W. Tozer at Delta Lake Camp, she committed her life to missions the summer of 1955. As a teen, her family moved to Nyack, NY where she graduated from Nyack High School in 1960. The next fall, she enrolled in Nyack (Missionary) College as a Missions Major. There, she and Dave began dating during their sophomore year. Since both planned to become missionaries, they decided to prepare together and see where God would take them. Engaged during the summer of 1963, they married June 6, 1964. After spending a year teaching at Lakeland Christian School in Florida, they returned to Nyack where Dave studied at Jaffray School of Missions (ATS) and Judy worked at the Lamont Geological Laboratory. Their first son, Thomas William, was born in August 1966; one month later, Judy and Tommy flew to Detroit, MI to join Dave. There, they worked as missionary interns at the Dearborn Alliance Church. Following their internship program, they returned to Delaware in May 1967 and flew to Brazil on August 11, arriving in Campinas, São Paulo, where they studied Portuguese For the next twenty-seven years, she and Dave served with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA). Over time, they lived in twenty-seven different houses in Brasília, Federal District; Curitiba, Paraná; Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, SP. Judy adroitly made each house a warm and friendly home. During those years, she and Dave worked in evangelism, church planting and leadership development; she taught Sunday school, discipled new believers, was mission secretary and bookkeeper, Bible Institute teacher and librarian, while raising three sons, two of which (John “Randy” and Philip) were born in Brazil. Returning to the United States for furlough in 1994, the Joneses moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where Dave directed the C&MA’s Office of Missions Mobilization. Judy worked for a year and a half with Christian Publications, Inc. in telemarketing before going to the C&MA National Office to become administrative assistant for CAMA Services, the C&MA Relief and Development ministry. After seven years in Colorado, Dave and Judy returned to Brazil in early 2001 where they established the Brazil branch of FATELA, the Latin America Alliance Graduate School of Theology. In addition, they helped plant an Alliance Church in the Eastern Zone of São Paulo. In the fall of 2004, they received a call to pastor First Alliance Church (One in Christ Community Church) in Hockessin, DE, where they ministered from January 1, 2005 to October 31, 2009. There, Judy served as church secretary, led AWANA and many other behind-the-scenes ministries. In April of 2010, Judy joined Dave at the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington, DE, where she worked as administrative assistant to the president, Rev. Tom Laymon, until 2015 when she “retired” to help raise her grandchildren. From July 2019 to June 2022, she and Dave served as interim pastoral couple at Crosspoint Community Church in Edgewood, Maryland. In the many ministry venues where Judy worked, she served efficiently and cheerfully. Judy will be remembered by many women in Brazil and the United States as a role model, a mentor who taught by example and exhortation. Her husband, Dave, and sons Thomas, Randy and Philip, and grandchildren, Edan, Sean, Sophie and Savana, will dearly miss her ready smile, her good humor and her love and godly example. Yet, they do not “mourn as those who have no hope.” Judy’s life verse: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
