Sharon S. Groome
January 20, 1957 - March 19, 2021
Sharon Lee Self Groome, age 64, of Bear, DE passed away on March 19, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family after a valiant seven plus year battle with ovarian cancer. Cancer did not win, Heaven did. Sharon was born on January 20, 1957 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Ms. Willie A. Self and grew up in North Wilmington. A 1975 graduate of Concord High School, she later went on to study criminal justice at University of Delaware. Throughout her life, she held many different jobs and until her diagnosis worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for 13 years conducting various surveys. But her most rewarding job (and greatest accomplishment) was being a mother to her adoring children always supporting them in every way possible. They were her absolute world, and she loved them more than all the stars in the sky. Another one of her most cherished memories was helping to raise her granddaughter. Nothing made her more proud than her children and granddaughter, constantly sharing stories about them to anybody who would listen. Sharon was one of a kind, a real firecracker with an outgoing personality. Out and about, she never hesitated to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family from holiday get-togethers, vacations to the beach, playing board games or just catching up on the phone. Even when she couldn’t muster the energy anymore, she insisted her home was always clean and dusted with a handy bottle of Windex. Dancing was one of her favorite pastimes, breaking out in dance whenever a song she liked came on. Her beautiful and fighting spirit will live on in all of those who loved her. Sharon will be lovingly remembered for her smile, kindness, quick-wit, and heart of gold. Sharon is survived by her husband of 36 years, David Groome; her son, Jamie Groome; daughter, Sarah Groome; granddaughter, Renee Hrycek (Melvin); great-granddaughter and the apple of her eye, Willow; sisters, Peggy Self and Nancy Tweedy; cousins, Doris Trassato and Denise Ferdinand; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Willie Self; and nephews, Jassen Castner and Brian VanSant. Sharon’s family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Mark Borowsky, Dr. Stephanie Jean and everyone at the Helen Graham Center for their care and support during her courageous battle. And the staff at Delaware Hospice for bringing comfort in her final days. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 5 to 7PM, at the Strano and Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road in Newark, where a service will be held at 7PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to be made in Sharon’s honor to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance at https://give.ocrahope.org/sharongroome . Anything you can give is truly appreciated and will make a real difference in the fight against ovarian cancer.
