Alfonse John Delpizzo

Alfonse John Delpizzo, 93, went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2025. He was born at home at 5th and Lincoln in Little Italy, in Wilmington, Delaware on January 16,1932, the only child of Dante Delpizzo and Mary Ramondo Delpizzo. Alfonse was known to his friends, of which he had many, as either Al, Al Del, or Del. He graduated from Wilmington High School and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Dante Delpizzo and Mary Ramondo Delpizzo, his first wife Loretta, and his cousin, Alfred John Longobardi, an only child also. They were best friends and closer than brothers. Al is survived by his daughter, Maria Ann Lombardi, and her husband, Nick Lombardi, of Atkinson, New Hampshire, a host of cousins and friends, and his dearest friend, Carol Aiken. She was his walking partner, traveling companion and, in the latter years, his caregiver overseeing his needs. Throughout his life, Al was engaged in several businesses working as a salesman for Carlson's, hair stylist, manager at Hermine's and other restaurants, and then sole owner of a Tanning Salon in Trolley Square. Al had a zest for life. He loved meeting new people. He enjoyed sports, horse racing and playing cards with his friends at St. Anthony's Italian Club. He liked watching and cheering on the Fightin' Phils and Eagles. He was known for his infectious laugh, especially when sharing the colorful stories of his life and childhood. His family and friends always enjoyed listening to them. But, Al's favorite pastime was traveling. He traveled to many small towns along the northern east coast, but his absolute favorite place to travel to was Italy. He visited at least 8 times over the years. In the last several years of Al's life, he attended Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in downtown Wilmington or Saint Anthony’s Church and drew very close to the Lord. There will be a funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1012 North French Street at 11:00 am on Friday September 26th. A chapel side service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City, Bear, Delaware at 1:00 pm. A luncheon will follow at 2:00 pm at Mrs. Robino’s 520 N. Union Street, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Alfonse to St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, or any charity for children of your choice. A special thank you should be given to Delaware Hospice (Lauren Heintzelman & Erica Walker), as well as HomeWatch of Delaware (Janika Smith), for their compassionate care of Alfonse.
