Amy Louise Hamm

After a long and courageous cancer battle Amy Louise Hamm passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 20th, 2025. She was born on March 7th, 1974 in the Wilmington General Hospital. Amy attended St. John The Beloved Catholic Grade School and then St. Mark’s Catholic High School in Wilmington, DE. She graduated in 1994 from Goldey Beacom College with an Associate’s degree as a legal secretary. Immediately after, she started her career as a legal secretary with Connolly, Bove, Lodge, and Hutz, which later became Novack, Druce, and Quig. From there she moved to Faegre, Drinker, Biddle, & Reath LLP as a patent prosecution paralegal. Her career spanned 30 years with the same employer and long-time coworkers. Amy was first diagnosed in 2018 with breast cancer which she successfully beat. Her cancer metastasized twice more, in which she also overcame those battles. In 2025 she was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome), a very rare blood cancer. With her numerous trips for treatment at the Helen Graham Cancer Center and several stays at Christiana Hospital, she made close friends with the nurses, doctors, and staff. Amy considered all of her caregivers to be family. When Amy would walk into any of her appointments, she was a ray of sunshine brightening the day with her infectious smile and fun personality. She had a way of touching others that was heaven sent. Everyone knew when Amy was around as they all had to visit her for her for a quick smile and a dose of her vibrant energy. She never let her cancer diagnosis stop her from living her life to the fullest, constantly being there for others all the while putting her own suffering to the side. Amy could brighten a room just with her presence, no matter how sore or down she may have felt. Amy was an avid fan of all things Disney and went many times to Walt Disney World with her husband and family for vacations (some even just for a day or two to get away). Her many trips to Florida allowed her and her husband to meet many kind people with most becoming very close friends. Her hobbies included, scrapbooking, making beaded pens, and enjoying the scenery of Assateague Island, and Ocean City, Maryland. She and her husband Brian took many day trips to various locations, some being 2 or 3 hours away just to do something different. Amy loved fostering cats and kittens in need of help for survival. She bottle-fed newborn kittens around the clock, cared for ill and disabled cats, and took in many strays to help rehome. Amy’s caring abilities not only brought joy to humans, but the animal world felt her love too. Amy never let life or her illnesses slow her down. She always kept going and pushed through with a smile on her face and kindness and love for everyone. Cancer became a “bump in the road” for her no matter how hard it was to power through the day. Amy persevered all the while cheering up others, loving family and friends, inspiring all of those around her to live life and dream to the fullest. Amy is survived by her loving husband Brian C. Hamm, whom she married on October 12, 1996. The love she shared with Brian was absolutely magical (possibly stemming from their honeymoon to Walt Disney World). She is also survived by her loving daughter, Ashley L. Hamm; her caring mother, Frances L. (McBride) Bonk; and her son-in-law, Borislav Stoyanov (Bobby). She leaves behind her beloved pets: several cats and her 3 puppies Chester, Winston, Cody, and her grand dog, Fury. Amy was preceded in death by her father Michael J. Bonk; her grandparents: Felix Bonk Jr. and Martha (Markowski) Bonk, James McBride and Edna (Wood) McBride. Many foster kittens and her dogs Rupert, Lizzy, Holly, and Medusa all call Heaven home and await her arrival. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 9:30 AM to 11 AM on Friday, March 28th at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 801 N. Dupont Hwy., New Castle, DE 19720. A private cremation will follow.
