Carmen Maria Ramos

Carmen Maria Ramos was born November 24, 1958, in Yauco, Puerto Rico to the late Felicita Albino and the late Pedro Caraballo. After a seven-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia, at the age of 64, Carmen was called home with her Lord Jesus Christ on September 6, 2023, surrounded by family at Wilmington Hospital. Carmen spent her earlier years with her parents in Puerto Rico and Lakewood, NJ before moving to Delaware in 1975 to live with her late sister. Later in that same year, she met the love of her life, Castor and together they united in marriage on May 28, 1977, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Wilmington. Together they share three children, Luis, Melitza and Isael. Carmen was a very driven woman. In 1987, she joined the Medical Center of Delaware (now known as Christiana Care) working as a cashier in the cafeteria. Determined to make a better life for her and her family, she went back to school to achieve her GED diploma in 1992 which enabled her to enroll in the Patient Care Technician (“PCT”) course offered by the hospital. With her PCT certificate, Carmen was able to do what she loved, which was to serve and help others in their time of need. Carmen was well known for her positive attitude and smile which lit up every room she walked into. Carmen served the hospital and its patients for almost 30 years before she medically retired at the age of 58. Carmen was an active member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church where she attended faithfully every Sunday morning until her illness disabled her. Carmen was a member of the church choir where she enjoyed singing “albanzas”. When she was no longer attending church, she would continue to sing along to the CDs of the church choir at home. Carmen loved making memories with her family. Every summer, she would plan camping trips to Lewes Beach, DE and White Crystal beach. Carmen also LOVED music and dancing. Any party or festival, Carmen was sure to be found on the dance floor moving her hips with her favorite dance partner, her husband. Carmen also enjoyed cooking and trying new dishes. Everyone loved her potato salad, her brownies with cream cheese icing and her infamous “sorullitos”. Carmen is preceded in death by her parents, Felicita Albino and Pedro Caraballo; her only sister, Modesta Caraballo; older brothers, Neftaly and Sergio Caraballo; her younger brother, Pedro “Pello” Caraballo; and her bonus granddaughter, Ra’Nae Grinnell. Carmen leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 46 years, Castor Ramos; her three children: Luis (Kaki) Ramos, Melitza (Reginald) Grinnell and Isael Ramos; her three grandchildren: Kaneja Ramos, Isael “JR” Ramos, and Lorenzo Grinnell; her bonus grandchildren: Chanelle and Chantel Spotswood, Ra’Gine and Reggie Jr. Grinnell, and Jamika Wright; two brothers: Issac (Carmen) Caraballo of San Lorenzo, PR and Amadin (Julia) Caraballo of Middletown, DE and a host of nieces, nephews, brother and sister in laws, and close friends. A visitation will be held Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 5-8 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702. Another visitation will be held Friday, September 15, 2023, from 10-11 AM at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 1010 W. 4th Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM.
