Clarence James Montgomery, Jr. “Jim,” 72 of Townsend, Delaware died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, March 31, 2025. He was the beloved and cherished husband of Rhonda Erickson Montgomery. Theirs was an epic love story spanning 45 years. Jim and Rhonda were blessed with a loving and very close-knit family that included their sons, James and Justin Montgomery; niece, Lauren Shockley; nephew, Kenny Walker; daughter-in-law, Tobi Montgomery; son-in-law, Corey Matthews; grandsons: Kyle Shockley, Ty Montgomery, Trent Montgomery, and J.R Montgomery; granddaughters, Mackenzie and Mariah Matthews; and siblings, Marie Montgomery Riggs and Daniel Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence James Montgomery Sr., Joan Critzer Montgomery; and sister, Cathy Montgomery Sheppard. Jim was raised on Family Affair Farm in Middletown, Delaware where he lovingly cared for thoroughbred racehorses that his father raised and trained for racing at Delaware Park Racetrack. Jim had a deep love for his dogs as well and could be seen relaxing in his chair “covered” in dogs. Jim attended Gunning Bedford High School where he enjoyed playing football. After high school, he attended the University of Delaware and achieved a degree in Agriculture Business Science which he used to grow the “best fields of alfalfa” in Middletown, DE. Jimmy later went on to make his living as a licensed electrician, owning his own business for many years. Jim’s greatest joy in life, next to being married to Rhonda, was being a loving and dedicated grandfather. He spent many precious hours driving his grandsons back and forth to school. It was during these rides that he developed an incredibly strong and supportive bond with each of his grandsons. He could be seen in regular attendance at the numerous sporting events the boys participated in. He also shared a special bond with his granddaughters, Mackenzie and Mariah, who daily, upon arriving home from school, would “check on Papa” to see if he needed or wanted anything. Jim loved the Lord! He loved to read his Bible and listen to Christian music for hours at a time. He most especially loved talking and teaching about the Lord’s words and promises for all of us. It is knowing that Jim is most definitely by the Lord’s side, that we, his earthly family, can say with great confidence that we will meet again one day. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, April 18, 2025, from 1-2pm with a Celebration of Life from 2-3pm at: Red Lion Christian Academy Sanctuary, 1390 Red Lion Road, Bear, Delaware 19701.
