Rev. Clayton E. Moorman

On June 1, 2016, Rev. Clayton Moorman, age 66, of Elkton, Maryland went home to be with his Lord. Clayton Moorman was born on July 31, 1949 in Roanoke, Virginia, where he lived with his parents and sisters until moving to New Castle, Delaware. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1967 and from Baptist Bible College of Springfield, Missouri in 1970. He returned to New Castle with his bride, Sharon, and served as the youth director of Newark Baptist Church in Elkton, Maryland for six years. In 1976 he accepted the call to his first pastorate at Faith Baptist Church of Granite City, Illinois, where he served for nine years. In 1985 he returned to Newark Baptist Church as the associate pastor. In 1993 he became senior pastor, an office he held until his death. In addition to his pastorate, Pastor Moorman volunteered as a chaplain at Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland for 19 years. He also served on the Bioethics Committee at Union Hospital. In 2016 he became the chaplain for the Cecil County Sherriff’s Department. Clayton loved the outdoors, and greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his yard. He had an avid interest in classic cars, and enjoyed attending and competing in car shows. He was a deeply devoted family man, and loved to laugh and tell stories around the table or campfire. But his primary devotion was to Jesus Christ, and to the work of the Lord’s Church. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Moorman; his son Travis Moorman and wife Laurie and their daughters Emma and Kylie of Milford, DE; daughter Melanie Blissick and husband Chris of Newark, DE; and daughter Kelley Moorman of Elkton, MD. He is also survived by sisters: Jeanne Maclary and husband Bill Clancy; Teresa Booth and husband Jeff; Cindy Cockerham and husband Marty; and Loretta Moorman and husband Michael Wilson; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his brothers and sisters in Christ at the Newark Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifton and Jettie Moorman, and his sister Connie Moorman Scheidt. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, at Newark Baptist Church, 6011 Telegraph Rd, Elkton, MD 21921 from 3 to 6 PM followed by a celebration of Pastor Moorman’s life at 6:00 PM.
