Deborah Hawkins Mayhan

The wonderful life of Deborah Hawkins Mayhan began on January 5, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Clarence and Rosie Lee Hawkins. She was lovingly known as “Mom Deb” by family and friends. Mom Deb transitioned from earth to glory on Monday, February 26, 2024. The family moved to Las Vegas, NV. After a short stay in Las Vegas, the family moved to Los Angeles, California (LA). Mom Deb attended Woodcrest Elementary School and Brett Heart Jr. High. She graduated from Washington High School in 1972. Mom Deborah was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, under the late Bishop L.C. Brown, where she loved singing in the choir. Deborah met the love of her life and married Willie B. Mayhan in 1986. In 1986, she began her professional career as an optician technician. She was employed by Capital Cleaners in Middletown, DE, and after retiring, she continued to work for Sunoco Travel Center in Newark, DE. Mom Deborah attended Disciples of Faith Fellowship located in Wilmington, DE, under Apostle Terrance B. Walker. She also attended Canaan Baptist Church in New Castle, DE, under Rev. Dr. Christopher Bullock. Mom Deb could really cook but her specialties were banana pudding and sweet potato pies. She loved to shop, dance, spend time with her grandkids and great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling back to LA and Las Vegas for family reunions. She also loved spending time at Wawa and buying morning coffee with her loving brother, Leroi Hawkins. Mom Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Rosie Lee Hawkins; two brothers, John Batchelor and Bennie Hawkins; and two sisters, Carolyn Hawkins and Valeria Hawkins. She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters: Gwendolyn Hawkins, Wilmington, DE, Rosalind Hopkins (Therman) DE, and Valeria Webb, Elkton, MD; one son, Byron Mayhan, Wilmington, DE; one brother, Leroi Hawkins, Wilmington, DE; grandchildren: Deborah (Nish) Hawkins, Zakuon Binard, Nyra Simms, Robert Ervin, Jr., Heaven Dennis, Miracle Dennis, Michael Dennis, Nevaeh Mayhan, Illiana Mayhan; great-grandchildren: Chyna, Kase, Milan, whom she deeply loved so very much, especially spending time with them and feeding them; one special great niece, Yolonda Hawkins (Yo Yo); and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends whom she all dearly touched. A viewing will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at City of Love Church, 2200 N. Market St., Wilmington, DE, 19802, from 10 AM- 12 PM, followed by a celebration of life at 12 PM.
