Diane M. (Swarter) Saienni

Diane M. Saienni (Swarter) of Newark, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 21st at the age of 63. Loved and cherished by so many, Diane will be missed dearly not only by her loved ones, but by all who knew and recognized her beautiful spirit, generous heart and incredible sense of humor even in the face of life’s challenges. Born and raised in Elsmere and later Newport, DE to Joseph P. Swarter and Isabelle (McCaughan), she attended St. Matthew’s grade school and Saint Mark’s High School in Wilmington, DE and graduated from Goldey-Beacom College. Diane retired in 2018, after 36 years of service, as a Senior S.A.P. Analyst for Delmarva Power/Exelon. Diane is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Joseph P. Saienni; her children, Luke (Alyse) and Lindsay, and stepson Matt Peart; and her beloved grandchildren, Mason and Addison. She is also survived by her brothers and sister, Fred Swarter (Sandy), Charles Swarter (Rhonda) and Cathy Loos (George); as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death and returns to the loving arms of her parents and brother Joe (Dorene). Diane loved the beach and could often be found in her chair by the waves, a book in hand. She and Joe enjoyed many trips to Florida, Aruba, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and to their own beach house in Rehoboth, where they made precious memories with their children and grandchildren in recent years. She also had many friends gained throughout her life who all adored her and with whom she enjoyed lunches, trips and lifelong companionship. Her grandson Mason brought her tremendous joy over the past five years, joy that was doubled with the arrival of her granddaughter Addy in August. Her time with her second grandchild was limited, but she was able to enjoy the moments that were granted. Diane was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019, a difficult path she journeyed with grace and the strength to continue to strive for more time with her family. The last few years and her final days were challenging, but despite her own struggles, she never complained, never stopped trying and lived simply by the motto: “one day at a time.” Her family extends a special thank you to the chemo nurses at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center as well as the nurses at the 6E Oncology Unit at Christiana Hospital who provided her with compassion and care at the end of her life. “Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.” A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 28th from 10:00am – 12:00pm at St. Matthew’s Church, 901 E Newport Pike in Wilmington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00pm. Interment will be private at Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a cancer research charity of your choice.
