Doris Ann Smith

Doris Ann Smith of New Castle, Delaware died peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. She was born in Elkton, MD and raised on her grandparent’s farm in Rising Sun, MD. Her love of Cecil County never waived. She was a proud graduate of Rising Sun High School Class of 1948. Her yearbook entry noted her desire to come to Wilmington, Delaware and become a secretary which she did. She worked for the DuPont Company, Junior Achievement, and Intercontinental Chemical Services (ICS) located just outside the Port of Wilmington. If you called her at work, you would get to hear that wonderful telephone voice. Her favorite job was bartending because she got to meet so many interesting people. She usually bartended at the local VFW or American Legion. She worked at Durney Post, Diamond State, or 7th Avenue just to name a few. She also played Shuffleboard at those locations. She was a ferocious reader & full of curiosity. Every day she read the Wilmington News Journal, Cecil Whig and NY Post. If she wasn’t reading the newspaper, she is reading a magazine or a cookbook. She had an extensive cookbook collection. In the summer, she loved sitting outside, getting tan and listening to country music. Eating crabs was another favorite pastime. If she went out to dinner, a Southern Comfort Manhattan was her drink of choice. She is survived by her children, Jim Carlisle (JoAnn) and Lisa Hudson (Robert); sister, Betty J. Smith; grandson, James R. Carlisle (Brittney); niece, Ronda Baker and nephew, Ron Baker. She was predeceased by her mother Anna R. Anderson (Smith); uncle F. Auvan Smith; and the grandparents who raised her & were affectionately called Mommy and Daddy, Harry H. Smith & Etta May Smith (Slicer). The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Carol Regan for her care and companionship as well as the staff of Delaware Hospice during Doris’ final months. This includes her nurse Decia, aide Erica, Chaplain Lee, social worker Christine, and her entire on-call staff. We will be eternally grateful. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 6 to 7 PM at the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road in Newark, where a memorial service will be held at 7 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris’ memory to Delaware Hospice, 630 Churchmans Road, Suite 200, Newark, DE 19702 or to Humane Animal Partners 701 A Street Wilmington, DE 19801.
