Edward "Ed" Arnold Fie

Edward “Ed” Arnold Fie, 75, of Middletown, Delaware, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised throughout New Castle County, he was known for his unwavering work ethic and passion for craftsmanship. A self-employed general contractor since 1973, he poured much of his life into his work, which he loved. He valued and loved his family as well as the many relationships he made through his career in pursuit of a job done right. Ed was born to the late Laburn A. Fie, Jr. and Kay L. Andes Fie Henretty. He attended Wilmington High School, during which time he developed a sense of determination and self- reliance that would follow him throughout his life. As a teenager, he worked at Cast Stone Products and then Max Ambach & Sons, who built the Coffee Run condominiums in Hockessin. These were the first of many opportunities that nurtured his lifelong passion for building and craftsmanship. Ed spent more than five decades contributing to the changing landscape of Delaware through his projects. Among his most notable works were: The Big Kahuna, one of the very first projects that began the revitalization of the Wilmington waterfront; The Kirkwood Soccer Club Complex; The Wilmington Opera House renovations in collaboration with MBNA; as well as numerous custom homes, commercial, and specialty construction projects across the region. He earned a reputation as someone who could be counted on for skill and for always being willing to lend a hand. His contributions touched countless families and businesses, leaving behind structures that will stand as a testament to his talent and commitment. Ed married Susan H. Wilson Fie, his wife of nearly 50 years, and together they built a family rooted in resilience and love. He was the proud father of Edward Arnold “Arnie” Fie II and Rachel E. Fie, who preceded him in death in 1998 and remained close to his heart throughout his life. In his later years, Ed found great joy in simple rituals: listening to country and bluegrass music in the garage, crafting bluebird houses and clocks, and staying busy organizing roof replacements and home projects, especially for friends, neighbors, and those who needed a hand. Earlier in life, he enjoyed gun-sporting, spending weekends at trap shoots, and turkey shoots where camaraderie mattered as much as competition. Ed was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, where Jackson Lodge in Delaware City was his Blue Lodge. Ed was resourceful, steady, and generous. He passed on the values of hard work, self- sufficiency, craftsmanship, and showing up for others. He was a man who preferred doing over talking, and those who knew him understood that his actions were his legacy. Ed was a wonderful husband, father, and friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Ed is survived by his wife, Susan; his son, Arnie; and his siblings: Linda K. Fie Hotzman, Virginia D. “Ginny” Fie Toller, John A. Fie, Suzan E. Henretty Larrimore, and Jack W. “JW” Henretty. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Rachel E. Fie; and his brother, Laburn A. “Zande” Fie III. Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 from 10AM to 12 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702. A celebration of life service will begin at 12 PM. Burial will take place at Hickory Grove Cemetery, 378 Port Penn Rd., Middletown, DE 19709. Immediately following the graveside ceremony, the family invites all to gather at the Augustine Tavern to toast Ed’s life, share stories, and fellowship in a more casual setting.
